Checking Oil

Are my hands just too darn big, or is anyone else out there having trouble getting the dipstick (no jokes, please) in again, after finally being able to get it out? The routing seems very convoluted on my G35 sedan.

Thanks

Re: Checking Oil

Your hands are fine-- it's just evil. Even Infiniti will admit to making it tough to access- another way to get you to come in to the dealership to get an oil change. If you are apprehensive about checking it, odds are you'll be apprehensive about changing it... It doesn't affect those who really know what they're doing, but it does intimidate those that are on the cusp.

PS. (Insert gratuitous 'dip stick' joke here)

Re: Checking Oil

Rather have the dip stick like it is with this great motor than a easy dipstick and a crappy 3.8 motor like my caravan.

Like evrything good in life, if it is easy then it aint worth it.

Have a healthy day!

Re: Checking Oil

Gary, you are right on. The dip stick looks like some mid-evil torture device. I am not sure what the boys were thinking, but this was not there "high" moment...or maybe it was? Don't let this minor inconvenience keep you from checking that oil!

G35/S/MT....this car rocks!

Re: Checking Oil

I totally freaked out the first time I saw that dipstick!! After some practice I got pretty good at it, but try to check the oil when it's dark...pretty near impossible. At least they built in a guide so you can find the hole. PS I usually have no trouble finding the hole, so lay off...LOL.

Re: Checking Oil

That guide tends to collect sand and grime.... make sure you clean it before taking out the dipstick. If you catch that grit while replacing the dipstick, it's like pouring sand into your engine.

Re: Checking Oil

The whole oil change procedure is a nightmare. I did my first one last night. Come on...15 or so bolts to drop the belly pan to access filter????? Jeez.

Re: Checking Oil

Damn, makes the dealer's oil change price of $45 incuding a loaner and wash sound good! I'll be doing that for sure!

Re: Checking Oil

Just get a Black & Decker rechargable drill or screwdriver. That along with a 10mm socket makes the oil change a breeze. The underbody shield contributes significantly to the great aerodynamics.

Also, even if the dealer does the oil change, you still take the risk that they mess up somewhere, like not replace all the bolts, not put enough oil in there, strip your drain plug, etc. Not to mention that other owners have gotten their G's back with dings and scratches. No, no, no... I'll be the only one changing out the lifeblood of my VQ.

Re: Checking Oil

It's $30 for an oil change here, and no loaner.. they make me wait. They stick to the "2 hours labor or more for a loaner" rule. By the time they change my oil and do the crappy car wash thing, I could have changed it myself. Washing takes me longer, but the car is actually clean when I'm done with it.

Re: Checking Oil

That's fine if you have a way to dispose of the old oil! Don't say "they recycle it" I know, but you have to get it there! Guess the Infiniti dealers all have different ways of doing stuff for sure!

Re: Checking Oil

Actually, I usually swing by WalMart to return my used oil - since that's generally where I buy it from in the first place. Plus, they're closer to the house than the dealership.

Re: Checking Oil

Well, I have no way of transporting it, not taking it in my car, LOL! BTW, I had my car into the dealer this week, and the wash job wasn't too bad, much better than I was expecting, and a helluva lot better than any of the car washes around here!
