I'd like to jack up my G using a floor jack, but I wonder where are the jack points. For my Mercedes, it has jack point platforms under the car, but the G does not. I also notice that under the side sills where the jack point is recommend there's a thin rail running lengthwise across the car. Do I need a special adaptor device to fit the rail and jack the car? Or can I just jack up the car right under the thin piece without any adptation device? Will that rail deform if I do so?

 

It's in the Owner's Manual, Section 6-4. There's a diagram and instructions.

Yes make sure you get the adapter or whatever they are called. You will crush the thin metal. Had local shops do this ot me.

I know that gordgee has a "Jacking Your G" thread in the FAQ/DIY forum that discusses this adapter. He made his out of wood. If anyone knows where to get the adapter, I'd be forever grateful!

so this means that, hypothetically, if someone were to get a flat, you would need that adapter to jack up the car? wtf. i must be missing somethign here.

So my concern is that most mechanics know that there is a thin piece of rail running across the under body of our Gs, right? And when they jack up our cars, they'll take caution and install an adapter to their jack, right? Just concerned since our Gs doesn't have some kinda supporting platform for floor jack. Thank you.

 

wait wait wait. when they installed my springs, they used that spider jack thing and jacked my car up. did they hurt it? bastards!

The jack in your truck used for changing flats has the appropriate slot in it's top.

Firestone jacked up my car without such an adapter to patch a tire and bent that thin rail. I used pliers to straighten it back out. I remember now why I don't like taking cars to Firestone.

I have jacked my G35 sedan with my floor jack
by raising via the side sills, no problem. The lift portion
of the jack has some indentations around the circular end.
I just make sure the indents match up with the sill indent.

I jacked my G from the side lift point using a piece of hardwood at the contact point, it worked fine. The trouble is when you want to reach all the way in to the center lift point to raise the entire front or rear. You need a long body jack to reach it, and those aren't cheap.

There are two, one for the front and one for the back. There is a pic posted by Gordgee from the shop manual in the DIY forum. Here is a link to that thread:

You need a very long and low jack to get to either one, or you have to already be up in the air a bit, like on ramps.

I had to lift my G to install the Borla Cat-back so I used gordgee’s “Jacking Your G” post in the DIY section as a model. I made a set of jack stand adapters out of wood and a jack pad for the floor jack out of some rubber matting I found at my local hardware store. It comes in a big roll and you can buy it by the foot. It was only $4.50 a foot. I think it’s normally used to line the bottom of your toolbox. I bought one foot and cut six 3.5 x 3.5 inch squares out of it. You can adjust this measurement to fit your floor jack's saddle. I estimated four squares together were thick enough (about 0.75 inches) and I taped them together using black electrical tape. When I jacked the G from the rear jack point I placed the pad on the floor jacks saddle and it worked beautifully. After I was done you could see in the rubber where the teeth of the floor jack “bit” in.

For the front I bought a set of Rhino Ramps at my local Sears store. They were only $20 and they can hold 8000 lbs. Plus the ramp is at a 17-degree incline so your stock bumper won’t hit. You won’t get as much height as using the jack stands but it was enough for the Borla install.
