Okay, so I thought about it and I have a response to your claim about a higher viscocity oil moving slower

The oil pumps on our Gs move at a constant rate regardless of what they're pumping. You can read more about oil pump design here. Because of this design, the oil will move at the same speed as before (transfering the same amount of heat) however, a very small parasitic horsepower loss will occur becuase it will be more difficult for the engine to turn over an oil with a viscocity of say 12cst @ 100c vs 14cst @100c

For those that drive hard, fuel economy is the last thing on their mind I would also imagine that extended engine life and decreased oil consumption is worth 0.1 % horsepower...

Does anyone really know how much power is lost using Xw40 vs Xw30 oil? What about the effect on gas mileage? My guess is that most of us wouldn't ever notice a difference.

This is what i know, 30wt at 250 degrees temp is a workable temp with safe everyday temps. The vq runs at very high pressures for reason im not sure why. the thicker the oil the hp it needs will be greater. with that being said there will be more thicker oil hitting parts moving in the engine. its called windage. this will kill hp.

Checked my oil level. 1/4 quart low after about 1600 miles according to the dipstick.

Some very good info here.
I like the one about factory filled with 10-40. My dealer uses 5-30 when changing oil.
I used a quart of oil at 2,400 original miles (with factory 10-40) Changed oil at 3,780 dealers 5-30wt. Used a quart after 2,100mi. added another quart after 1,200 more mi. Just changed oil today at 7,700mi.
This is getting excessive in my book.
Infiniti dealer tells me that Nissan says 1 quart/1,000mi. is acceptable and won't do anything warranty wise untill you exceed that usage.
Anyone know if that statement is true?

That's about where I'm at.

Roughly a quart every 1500 miles with Mobil 1 5w-30 Dino Oil. I just changed to Mobil 1 5w-30 SuperSyn 2 weeks ago, so I can monitor that now.

However, after reading this thread as well as this ( http://theoildrop.server101.com/foru...e=1#Post730507 ) , I am going to make the switch to German Castrol 0w-30. After some oil analysis, this oil has proven to be the perfect mate for the VQ.
