Oil consumption high?

I have a 05, 6MT, 24000 miles. I usually drive in the freeway and occassionally I may go over 4000 rpm. Right now my oil consumption is like a quart/3500 miles.
I use Mobil 1 5-30.
Isnt this kind of high?

What rpms do you typically drive at? When I'm on cruise control i'm at 2.5k rpm I have zero oil consumption after 7500 miles. If I let my rpms stay at around 3K or higher for a long period of time, I do start to notice an increase in oil consumption.

What you are experiencing does sound normal if you keep your rpms high, especially with that mobil 1 5w30 which is rated at only 11.3 cSt @ 100º C

I would recommend an oil in, or closer to, the 40wt viscosity range like the amsoil series 3000 or the German Castrol 0w30.

The series 3000 5w30 is 11.5 cst
The german castrol 0w30 is 12.x cst (can't find it online but I spoke with their customer service rep).

From what I've seen, the GC seems to give the best UOA results in the vq35 engine, probably due to it almost being a 40wt oil. The series 3000 has a tendancy to thicken up anyways, so it will slowly mature into the 40wt range and if it doesn't that's fine too. (I use the series 3000 and only lost .5 qts of oil after 7500 with plenty of WOT accelerations). The .5qts which I lost are probably from some of the regular 5w30 I had mixed in earlier when screwing around with my pre-luber so my guess is my oil consumption is at or near zero right now with 22k on the clock and the amsoil series 3000 oil.

Some of my friends with g35s who drive aggressively have reported significantly lower oil consumption with 40wt oils, speficially the amsoil 10w40 (also allowed by the manual), however, a slight decrease in gas mileage may also occur if you keep the engine rpms high with a higher viscosity oil.

The G engine does consume more oil than usual and I am comparing it to the E46 and CL 3.2 typeS I owned previously. Also the mileage, in general driving, is rather poor also.

IMHO, it's all related to the gearing and how the engine is stressed during operation... but its those same things that give the G its accelerating edge

I burn anywhere from 0.5-1.5qts per oil change.

You can get the JWT oil pan spacer to add an extra quart for better cooling and safety. It was well worth the $100 for the peace of mind.

I've heard this b4, that some VQ's don't like synthetic oil.
If it were my ride, I'd change back to dino oil and check consumption again.

Have you checked to make sure you don't have a small leak? Newspaper under the car overnight is very useful. I found a leaking gasket after 10,000 miles.

Might be something to this. I don`t know about 05-06, but the owners manual for my 04 plainly specifies dino oil. I have always considered synths to be better, but , so far, I have stuck with dino, and have not had to add any between changes.

I had to add oil once, but I hadn't checked the level after an oil change, so maybe they underfilled it. I had about 1200 on the oil change when I noticed it being a quart down, and when I got an oil change at 3000 miles, it hadn't gone down again.

Are you still under warranty? To me, that sounds excessive. Either you doing something wrong, or there is a mechanical problem, bit it doesn't seem like a modern car should burn that much oil. Now, that 25 year old vehicle I was following yesterday with the black smoke coming out the tail pipe...

First of all, we all know how difficult it is to check the oil with those insane dipsticks..... , so you want to be sure you have a good reading after an oil change to make sure it's right up to full, and make sure the car is on a level surface. Most fill stations are very level for this purpose.

Readings can be especially difficult with new oil which is hard to see, so be careful.

The followup reading are equally important, so make sure you're on level ground again and don't hurry the check.

Now you'll have a good idea of consumption and go from there.

Yes, Dino is recommended in the Coupe's VQ, but I've used synthetic, as many of us have.
Only a few have excessive consumption and this has sometimes been related to synthetic oils.

Like I said, if it were mine, and it's confirmed to be 'using' oil, then I'd quickly switch back to dino for a comparison, and go from there with warranty.
