Why so strong when first started?

On a cold start, the ECU fuel map dumps a lot of fuel into the engine and the car generally runs rich.

Also, I'm thinking it has to involve the timing being advanced when cold, then retarded once the the car warms up.

Don't drive your car hard until it has time for the oil to warm up!

Are you sure it is the car and not you getting used to the torque? It will slow down some when the engine heat-soaks but if you are driving around it should be getting enough air to stay cool.
