License Plate Problem

I just got my renewal tags in the mail and I went to take my plastic cover off the license plate in the back and one of the screws will not come out...it just spins. I can get one out and I looked at what held it in and it looks like there is a nut on the other side of it. It seems to just be spinning. I have tried everything to get that stinking thing off but nothing is working. Does anyone have any suggestions??? If not I may be forced to take the whole rear bumber off to get to it and I dont want to do that. How hard is it to remove the rear bumber anyway???

ez.

u need two tools. screw driver and dont know the name for the other one. It's like a flat head driver but with the center cut out. so its like two teeth on the end but in the middle theres space to fit the screw in between. Lets call it X tool. So u need Xtool and screwdriver

Take the xtool and fit the screw inbetween it and pull it towards you so that its tight on the inside. while doing that use ur screwdriver and start unscrewing the thing. the xtool is use to stop the spinning by tighting the space of the nut on the inside and leaving you to unscrew the screw spinfree.

understand my jumbo humbo? im handicap when it comes to describing things.
well goodluck

Is there a picture of this "X-Tool"?

I'm having the same problem. I was rear ended a couple of weeks ago. My frame to my licence plate was broken( lucky!!!) so I wanted to replace it.
Finally I ended up ripping it off( the frame). Both nuts were seized. I cannot figure out a way to get my hand up behind the rear bumper to grab the nut.

A special tool is neccesarry just for this simple task. What BS!!!

Any luck robbie51981?

I had the same problem and tried everything to get it off. Went to Oakville Infiniti and they removed it and put some new ones in. They were suppose to charge me $10 for it, but I got it for free.

I am wondering if anyone has found a solution to this. I just got a new-to-me G and I cannot remove one screw from the license plate frame to replace the license plate. It spins but "clicks" with each rotation and does not pull out. I believe the threading is stripped on either the clip or the screw itself.

If anyone could help come up with a solution it would be greatly appreciated. It's blood-boiling that I cannot drive my new car because I can't get a screw out of the bumper!

I think this is the style of tool they are talking about. It's actually great for plastic rivets. The idea is to pull the head of the screw towards you while you are unscrewing it. Another great tool is very common. It's called your fingernail. Try using your finger nail to pull the head of the screw towards you. I have seen that work a couple of times.

Thanks.

And nice finger nail comment -- but I keep mine short. Also, I had the same idea in mind when initially trying to remove the screw but I couldn't even get a flat-head between the screw and the plate I'm replacing.

Simplest way is to drill them out.. When I get home I'll post replacement part numbers that I got from NAPA

Just a quick thank you on this!

I had both the bolts rusted and broke the retainers for them. I started researching how t pull the bumper off and ran across this thread.

Swung by Infiniti and they had me in and out in 20 min at no charge. I don't think I've ever felt that good about a dealership before.

Funny, I also had this same problem several weeks ago. However I use a chain nose plier to get the screw out. See attach picture.
