Gas Mileage

I just got a new '06 sedan 6MT. The sticker said that my gas mileage would be 19 city, 28 highway. When I first got the car, my fuel economy was about 14 or 15. I assumed that this was probably due to my driving habits. When I first got it, I was pretty aggressive, and really took the time to enjoy the power and handling.

Then, after my first tank of gas was gone, I refueled with 93 octane and reset the fuel economy information screen. Since then, I've driven EXTREMELY conservatively to see if my gas mileage is what the sticker claims. 150 miles later, I'm hovering between 19 and 20 with a mix of highway, city, and country backroads driving. Considering that I'm driving so conservatively, this is disappointing. I've gone EXTRA easy on the car and I'm at the very bottom of the fuel economy range that I thought I was getting when I forked over $34K.

What kind of fuel economy is everyone else getting? What could I be doing wrong? What could be wrong with the car? Or is it just too early to tell? I realize that 150 miles isn't all that far, but I would think that I should be close to my actual average at this point.

Sounds about normal to me. You can't expect the best mileage from a large V6 motor. Just drive the car and enjoy it. IMO if you can afford the car you can afford the gas.

Sounds like your break in is out the window.

Mine varies. I've seen as high as 28 on the highway. Usually between 24 and 26.

Around town I get between 16 and 19, depending on my right foot.

I'm a conservative driver (mostly) with the occasional run-up to highway speed. No street racing or daily redlines. I followed the break-in as written in the manual. Not sure that has anything to do with the above average mileage, but there it is anyway.

Oh, and mine is calculated using basic math - I don't have nav. I have a '05 5AT sedan.

19-20 still sounds a little low to me.

With my supercharger and all the other mods, I still average 17-18 with mostly hard city driving (~75% city) and 19-21 city when I am nice to it. I get 23-25 highway averaging 85-90mph most of the time. We just went from Phoenix to Vegas a few weeks ago and doing a lot of passing and trying to stay 90-100mph with the A/C on we still got 24mpg.

Before I got my SC I was getting 20-21 with the same city driving style and about 22-23 when I was nice to it. My highway was about 26.

Since my Stillen stage 4 the worst I have ever gotten was 14.3 for a full tank. It was all city and all redline.

What could be messed up that my mileage is so bad? I barely have any mods, and before the mods, my mileage has been HORRIBLE. It's good on the highway, I think in the upper 20's, but in the city.. forget it, mid teens. And this is with conservative driving... which I gave up on, cuz it seems like the gas burns up the same either way.

Don't trust EPA Mileage numbers... EPA numbers are NEVER what u will actually get in real city driving, if you have hills, lots of traffic, stop and go a lot etc your gas mileage will be MUCH lower...

I average about 20MPG mainly city driving, if its like 20% highway 80 city it goes up to like 22, if its a long highway haul I usually get 25-27

There are tons of threads on gas mileage. Unless you do all highway miles, don't expect high 20's. Other Japanese cars are more efficient but not many are tuned for performance like the G35. That is what your $34k went towards - performance and luxury. That said, if you want better mileage you should shift early (like 2000rpm) and skip gears (shift to highest gear asap).

I'm getting roughly 315 miles per tank, and I'm filling about ~16 gallons each time. MPG on these cars suck, but I've always thought it was due to the fact that I used to drive a 105hp Camry that would go 400 miles per tank.

Yep, I've got a 2003 G35 Sedan and it drinks gas like water. Don't even think about switching to lower octane. I tried that and for some reason, it seemed like a tank of gas only lasted about 1/2 as long and it drove like a slug.

Consider this... the V16 Bugatti Veyron with 1000HP and close to 1000 pound feet of torque gets 9 city / 18 highway. You would think that the G35 might do better than averaging 16-17mpg. If the Veyron got the same MPG per HP as the G35, it would get about 2.5 city / 5 highway.

Fyi... at top speed (253mph) the Veyron will burn a full tank of gas in 12 minutes after traveling about 50 miles.

If the Veyron got the same MPG per HP as a G35, it would burn a full tank of gas in about 3 minutes after traveling a little over 12 miles.

Well if the EPA is wrong for the G35, what makes you think it isn't for the Veyron. But yea, I see what you're saying.
