My LSD swap is finished, important info

Ok, I finally got the stock viscious limited slip swap installed in my 6mt sedan yesterday. The shop and I discovered that the swap requires more than just bearings and seals from the LSD equipped diff case. And this needs to be added my my post in the FAQ section. It also requires the purchase of 2 stub spline axles that the drive axles mount to and are inserted into the diff case. The are totally different than the non LSD parts. They are part numbers 38220-AR011 and 38220-AR010. They sell for $148 each. The cost for all the labor, bearings and seals was $500, + the $300 for the required spline axles. Here's a pic of what they look like. I edited a pic posted by Jeff at performance Nissan

Had I known that this swap was going to cost me a extra $300, I would not have done it, thank god I got the stock viscous slip unit for next to nothing (DO NOT PAY MORE THAN $200 for one). Especially since it looks like the $900 Nismo clutch type LSD comes with the required stub axles as part of the purchase price, along with the bearings and seals.

I've only driven it the 65 miles from the installing Nissan dealer. So, I can't really comment. Once curious oddity is I seam to have allot more low speed understeer, where before it was pretty much nil with the Cusco sway bars. I'll do allot more testing. But, I'll likely set the front bar down to the softer setting.

Yes, low speed understeer may be a result of a very tight LSD. You are now not only pushing from the outside rear tire (which tends to push the car tighter into a turn) but also from the inside tire (which tends to open up the turning radius). The lsd helps most in low traction situations and in higher speed turns where the body roll lifts weight off of the inside rear tire causing it to spin. The lsd keeps the tires going more or less at the same speed.

Thank you for the reply gwise. In all my research, LSD having that effect was something I'd never seen or heard about. But I discovered today that my tire pressures were really low. I aired them up and altered the front to back pressures with a understeer reduceing bias. That alone dialed out most of the understeer. I spent all my day installing my LSDunique rear camber arms, so adjusting the front sway bar down will have to wait a couple of days. Again, that you for your reply.

I know this is slightly OT, but how hard was the camber arm install? Any chance you took photos?

Re: My LSD swap is finished, important info

Good post/info. I have thought about installing a LSD in my '03.5 6mt sedan (pissed that I missed out on the '04 standard LSD). Was wondering though, I bet the infiniti cars that come standard with LSD probably have different dynamic stability control and limited slip computer programming (to handle the different handling dynamics that the LSD offers). They say that even different sway bars and/or springs can throw off these sensors for stability and slip control. Might be better off trading in for an '04 6MT sedan where it is standard, and I know that all slip/stability control/eng.ECU programming is set for a LSD (probably doesn't impact the eng. ECU, but never know).

Any comments, ideas??

Running the 350Z suspension didn't impact the performance of the VDC or slip system in any way shape or form. Though it dramatically improved/altered the feel/performace of the car. And neither did the addition of the Cusco sway bars, all the electronics work just fine as designed. I haven't driven the car enough with the newely added LSD, to comment yet on VDC activity. But given my previous experiences, I don't think it will make a difference either. Nissan's liability lawers talk to much.

Yeah, Please keep us posted, if my addition is right, you spent $1000.00 on the LSD. Much cheaper than the trade for 2004 route. I'm planning to put in an LSD soon (also pissed about the 2004 LSD).

As for VCD function, I don't think there will be any different with or without LSD. VCD purpose is the same as LSD, which is to make sure the wheels are spinning at the same speed. In that case, the LSD will try it's best to control the wheels. I may be wrong (correct me). What do I know???

GSedan35, where did you get the LSD for $200? Did you find one in a junkyard? Is the G35 LSD the same as the 350Z LSD?

A local Infiniti dealer wants $1800 for the LSD internals + 300 for the two axle parts, way too much $$.

$1800, whoa, that's someone behind the counter that does NOT know what is involved parts wise. I think they're actually trying to sell the you the compleate diff. In their defense, neither Nissans or Infinitis parts computer is set up to let one easily walk in and order the specific part that actually is the viscious unit.

Here's the story of how I got the diff. I was watching a discussion on my350z were some base Z owners were asking what their LSD options were. Then I see this post from Jeff at Performance Nissan, he says that he has a nearly new stock 350Z limited slip (yes the Z and G diffs, limited slip parts are all 100% the same), and to pm him if your interested. I did and the price was actually paid less than $200 for it. I immedially bought it on the spot. Their is a stock viscious limited slip for sale right now on my350Z, but the guy is asking $300 for it, way to much, especially considering how much I paid and my diff had maybe 10 miles on it!!!
