Totally counterintuitive thinking about oil consumption

I read one post about someone using Mobil 1 and not having oil usage problems. Okay. (yes I know it's no longer PAO, who gives a crap)

Anyhoo:

Previously I've used 5w30 Castrol dino. A respected oil. From the last 2-3 changes at approx 3-4 thousand, I'd notice only about 3-3.5 quarts draining out. ugh. That means I've used about 1.5-2 quarts during that time period!

So I thought I'd use Mobil 1 and see what happens. 5W30. Well I drained it out at the last change and from what I can tell, I drained 4 qts at least. I'll say 4 to be conservative.(the container I drained into is a 4qt one but I can't tell exactly where the 4qt fill mark actually is. but clearly it isn't 4.5 or 5 qrts or it would be overfilled) So I used 1 qt in almost 4,000 miles (more like 3750-ish as that's where my navi maintance schedule is set at).

Well I'll check again when I change it. I went with Mobil 1 again and will try to see what drains out again. Wal Mart has 5 qt jugs of Mobil 1 synthetic for $22.xx. Not bad. Beats Costco price which is I think closer to $5-$6 per quart. Plus I can use the 5 qt container to drain old oil into.

Now this seems to be the direct opposite of what to expect. Usually dino oil doesn't get used up as fast as synthetics. Due to the less uniform molecule size. But what the hell....... I go with what works.

No, your result is not counterintuitive, because you have misconception about synth oil.

I use M1 every 3k and I burn 0.5-1.5qts. And I'm FI @8psi and drive my car hard.

Cool. But I'd also like to know if you experienced more oil usage before you used Mobil 1.

I changed mine for the 1st time at 1k miles with Castrol GTX (dino). I was planning to switch to M1 around 10-12k miles. I only have 500 miles on the GTX and the level has not changed according to the best dipstick ever engineered. I have about 15 quarts of M1 waiting to be used from the past years pepboy's coupon calendar but the walmart jug is the best way to go. I plan on 3k mile intervals with the GTX in hopes of minimizing the time the oil consumption could take place and will hopefully notice the same positive results of switching to M1. Anyone else with similar results?

That is all I have ever used since I got the car. There are quite a few other threads about burning oil, maybe they can help with more info.

i switched to mobil1 after 2000miles and have been using it every 3-5k miles, now have 24k. At the most i've lost maybe .25qts of oil.

I never said it was more/less resistant. I also don't think breakdown is the main cause of the usage many of us are seeing. Breakdown would lead to more sludge formation IMHO.

I also don't think uniform molecule size makes a oil resistant to breakdown. It's more a function of it's base stocks and additive packages. Again IMHO

"Usually dino oil doesn't get used up as fast as synthetics. Due to the less uniform molecule size"

This is what you said.
I am sorry, my English is probably worse than Borat's.
"breakdown"="usage"="burning" in context of oil inside car engine. Synthetic is "used up"="burned"="broken down" less due to its uniform molecular structure. If something lasts longer(used less), then it is more resistant to some adverse condition. Adverse condition in car engine is heat. How do you know about sludge-open your engine every oil change?
And don't tell me it is not "burnt", because you didn't say anything about "burning" in your post- I guess it evaporates from your engine due to freezing cold inside it. Or may be it solidifies and runs through cracks like dust and gets blown away by the wind. You also didn't say anything about oil puddle on your driveway. May be your neighbour stealing some?
Do not stick to my words after you already wrote nonsence.

Um what is your point? None of my statement are incorrect as far as I've stated IMHO.

Breakdown doesn't mean usage or "burnt" as you are stating here. As you can have broken down oil that still resides in your engine yes? aka sludge, nasty looking oil etc.....

Now when I do mean usage, I do mean it's getting burnt and thrown out the exhaust. But again, historically, synthetics are more prone to get used up as the molecules are an uniform size. If the space inbetween the rings are bigger than the uniform size of the synthetic oil being used, what is going to get past faster? Synthetics w/ 100% of the molecules smaller or dino w/ only 100-XX% smaller??

Or is this confusing to you?

As for sludge. No I DON'T open my engine but then again, opening the engine isn't required to get a decent guage on how much sludge is in your engine. Correct or incorrect? You can see inside your engine WITHOUT taking it apart yes?
