Gas smell from exhaust?

Just got a used 2004 auto, very happy with it until today, when I was reversing into the garage .. smelled a strong gas smell coming from the exhaust. But didn't see any visible smoke. Also the smell is only there when the engine is running, and there are no puddles under the car. Any thoughts on what it could be? Fuel injectors? I have no clue

All the Gs do that wait until you throw test pipes on there and you have no resenator...then you are going to smell some fumes!!!

Its normal though dont worry about it!

All cars do this on a cold start because the air/fuel ratio is very rich prior to the engine warming up. Some cars are worse than others. My wife's 98 Legacy GT is horrible on a cold start. I open the garage and back out immediately to keep the fumes from building in the garage.

Thanks for the input. I talked with the service advisor today, and she was saying that it was probably because of a bad throttle body or carbon buildup in the engine, which happen to require about a $200-300 service. I guess that's possible, but it's good to know that other people here smell the same thing and it might be normal after all. Anyone else?

That is a huge load of BS. It is not possible. Why in the world would carbon build up cause fuel odor? These service advisors amaze me.

Not all. Most Nissans do it really bad. Our Camry did it as well.

But my Acura does not and neither did my Audi.

I'm surprised she didn't say they're you're muffler bearings going out and allowing fuel to leak out your exhaust.

Come live in a region and where the temps drop into the sub 20s at night. I'm certain your TL would stick up the joint on a cold start in a 30 degree garage My friend's 05 TL is probably worse than my G on a cold start. In the warmer months, the odor isn't remotely as bad.

It was 25 degrees over the past few weeks a few times down here and it did not start up like any Nissan does. It's rev's were around 1200 rpm not 2000 like the G35 or other Nissans are. And it doesn't create that odor.

Then try to start our 01 Altima, phew.

Your G's cold start rev's were at 2000rpms? My 03 might see 1,500rpms for about 3 seconds on a really cold start, but after that it hangs out in the 900-1000rpm range until the engine warms a bit. I've heard of other G owners reporting extended high rpm warm ups. It must be a 6MT thing because a 2000rpm extended cold start with a 5AT would mean the car would tkae off hard without the brake.

As for the Altima, yeah, they're stinkers. We had a 94 and 97. With as bad as our Subaru stinks, I thought for sure the O2 sensors were crapped out, but my datalogger says all is good. It tested fine for Georgia emissions too about 6 months back. It still gets 23mpg in the city and 29mpg on the highway.
