Arrow 2005 G35X w/ Navi... How bad is it?

Hi everyone,

I'm gonna cut right to the point of this thread. I am considering buying a 2005 G35X w/ Navi. I have researched stuff about the G35 Navigation and it seems to me that people generally tend to agree that the pre-2006 ones were "crap".

Just so you know where I am coming from: I currently have a 2006 Toyota Prius (fully loaded, highest package), with voice-activated navigation (Hi-res, touch screen) and bluetooth. No, I am not a tree-hugger, I just love gadgets and for the price the Prius was jam-packed with them. Now I am tired of a slow-er car and want to move onto a sportier luxury sedan.

So, how bad would this 2005 navi be? Actually, what exactly is so bad about it compared to a 2006 G35's?

Also: do the 2005 G35X's have Bluetooth? Do they have Tire Pressure Monitors?

Thanks guys!

--Just trying to do my research.

I have it and it performs fine

yes, we have tire pressure monitor but it only goes off if it is low (doesnt tell you the tire pressure)

in the navi you get an oil change, oil filter, air filter maintenence schedual (it blips up a messege when you are near a change) trip computer w/ avg speed, distance, etc...

it fucntions just fine. Its just that there is nothing unique or special about this unit.

also, instead of the expensive OEM navi, you could just get an aftermarket system for much less money

Just get one without navi and get a car PC and put whatever type of navi you want on it

Thanks for the quick replies guys! Wow, these forums are good.

I have been thinking about Aftermarket navi systems, especially when I searched on these forums and saw the Z1 and such. Those look REALLY nice...BUT I have always been a sucker for the factory units and the way the factory navi pops up is pretty darn cool. So I am just trying to figure out exactly what to expect from it.

I am trying to search for some pictures of the actual interface screens of the 05 navi...anyone have any links for me?

Also, EQUATE, when you say "Car PC" do you mean just a laptop in the car? Or is this something new that I don't know of...?

As Mentioned I'd recommend getting an aftermarket system. Way more features. I have a Pioneer Avic Z1 and it beats any OEM navigation i've played with. It also looks OEM if you get the Double Din Kit.

i've got the oem nav and i would've gone without it if i could turn back time. but from experience, here's the good and bad. anyonelse can add their own.

pros:
accurate
quick pin-pointing/location time
nice screen location
mpg info
maintenance info
altitude info

cons:
slow access time when entering letters
no stereo info displayed
not touch screen
"enter" button incorporated into the cursor
not the greated resolution/detail
cannot use most (95%) features when car is in motion
won't play dvd's

Bigd2k6, Thank you for that list, that is the kind of info I was looking for! I have a question though: You said you can't use most features when car is in motion. This could be a problem because this is the only thing about my Prius Navi that I despise...does the G35 navi at least let you add or change destination address while the car is in motion? Or is that one of the things that gets disabled?

Truth, how much would it cost (approx) to have a DD z1 kit installed? (TOTAL price).

I'll give you what I paid.

I paid 1800 for the Z1.
New DD Kit off ebay for 250
Ipod Adapter 49
Blue Tooth Connector 120
Installation 200

Total $2419

Sounds like alot but thats around what the OEM nav package would cost anyways.

^^you might want to add another $50 for the steering wheel control adapter which lets you retain steering wheel buttons for the unit...pac-swix or something similar...

Hahaha, sadly enough, I know what you mean Neal376. Not having a touchscreen navi would not bother me at all; my current one is touchscreen and almost always has fingerprints on it, and I do hate that.
It's the actual system lacking in functionality that would get to me.

The Fingerprints are only noticiable when the unit is off which basically means when the car is not on so that shouldnt even be an issue.

IF you want touch screen just get the factory navi and replace the screen with a touch screen and the motion sensor can be disabled!!
