SL500 Roadster Smoked me!

Hi all Sedan owners!

Just a quick note, was side by side with a Mercedes SL500 Roadster today for about 3 lights. His 0-60 was head to head with me but at about 65+, this thing just flew past me like a bat out of hell! the SL has a 5 liter V8 aluminum block with 309 HP at 5000 RPM and 339 lbs of torque at 2500-5000RPM. The thing's a monster after 65 MPH. I was impressed at the high end speed of this car! The driver was in his late 30's early 40's and was giving me the thumbs up after each drag and I was giving him the peace sign! For a $89K+ price, it's a nice looking car with much high-end speed but off the line, we're neck and neck! It's nice knowing our G's and 90K Mercedes are running side by side!!!!

Re: SL500 Roadster Smoked me!

lol
No MB cars are equipped with a stick with the exception of the SLK. This is because they don't know how to make a good manual transmission. It was from an article from autoweek that interviewed someone from the management of MB.

Re: SL500 Roadster Smoked me!

He's probably asking if chiphead's G is 6mt or AT. And SL500's only come in AT's.

And yea the newer (R230) SL500’s are pretty quick even though they are really heavy cars. SL55’s are even way faster.

Re: SL500 Roadster Smoked me!

Mine's auto. The SL was definitly auto but all MB's have this touch shift tranny and the SL has a Driver-adaptive electronic 7-speed automatic touch shift! So even though it's a heavy car, it moves! It as has this stock fuel management system, twin sparks and dual ignition coils for each cylinder! If I had a MT, I may have taken him within the 0-60 or 70 range but this car bolts in the high speed range like nothing I've ever seen! Our G's are fast too in the upper speeds but this was outrageuos!

Re: SL500 Roadster Smoked me!

What were you thinking, taking on a SL500? This thing is fast, packed with punch. Very impressive. But I am glad to hear that your 0-60s were side-be-side. Well, to make you feel better, at least our Gs don't have spend as much time in garage and dealership as the SL.

That's cool to hear that we can keep up to around sixty. That's when I flip a switch, and buh-bye SL500. HAH!

Re: SL500 Roadster Smoked me!

The reason the car does well on the top range is V8 and 5 liter engine.

Btw C also comes with stick.

And the reason you can keep up with it to 60 is because it weighs just over 2 tons. Literally.

Re: SL500 Roadster Smoked me!

was it a 2003 or a 2004, cause only 2004 V8 MBs come with the 7Gtronic transmission. The 2003s have the standard 5-speed. Not that it'd make A LOT of difference, but just thought u should know...

Re: SL500 Roadster Smoked me!

I think he was messing with you. An SL 500 0-60 is way quicker then an 5A G35.

Re: SL500 Roadster Smoked me!

The SL's 0-60 is 6.1, a tenth faster than the G's. It's not a race until he hits 65+ then it's over! It was definitly a 2004. I know the style cause the Infiniti dealer I got my service at that day also sells MB's. I don't think the SL ever came with a MT? I wasn't crazy taking him on. I just wanted to see what the G could do against a car 3 times it's price! I too was impressed that the G stood ground for a bit. There are plenty of faster MB's (AMG) that would put us to shame. This was more just a test to see where we stand! I went into it knowing I'd loose in the stretch but it was fun! If anyone has the chance to take on a killer car like this or one of many others on the road today, take it and see what happens! It's not shameful to loose, it's shameful to run and hide!

Thanks for all your support and keep sharing more race stories - they're great!
