Wow, the wierd noises that come with the below-zero temp we've been getting

Here in the CHicago area, we've been getting below zero weather for a few days now. Just noticed a few of the strange noises it makes in this cold. Examples: low-pitch whine coming from the transmission when driving and the car is cold (it goes away when warm); creaks from somewhere outside the car, etc...can't wait for a warm-up....Anyway, my Bears just lost. Dangit!!!

Tranny noise is normal. Try to warm the car up as much as possible before you drive.

My brakes have gone nuts with squealing in this brutal cold. It may something to do with all of the salt residue I'm guessing as well.

All the salt and dirt will get your brakes very dirty. Some brake cleaner should do the trick.

Well if you have a 6mt might be the syncro noise coming from the transmission

I get a strange whistling sound when its cold out, but it goes away. Kinda sounds like wind coming in the window but I know its not that.

Yep--that's exactly what it sounds like. You can hear it through the shifter...

Sounds like a cold tranny. The fluid needs to warm up.

My steering column make crackle noises as it came down to me this morning... sounded frozen. *eeek*

Car runs great though, much better than previous cars I have had. I have an 06 X and it doesnt make any strange transmission noises that I could notice.

Its -4F, -25 with windchill, Ames Iowa

Wind noise? Or 6MT Syncros?

- So let me make sure I understand. They syncros problem sounds like wind coming through a small opening. I have a a high pitched wind sound, which sounds like it's coming from the sun roof, but I can't really isolate it. I wonder if its my 6mt (2004 w/ 22k miles)
