do we need the underbody plastic cover?

i wanted to know if the underbody plastic cover below the engine is really that necessary. i noticed today that there is a crack in mine, near the bumper...
this wasn't too big a deal to me, since you can't really see the crack, but it's causing a portion of the underbody cover to vibrate (but only when i am going >80mph ). it is making a "flapping" noise, which is pretty annoying.

i just wanted to take the underbody cover off and not have to deal with the noise, but i wanted to make sure this wouldn't lead to any unexpected problems. or if that's not possible i suppose i could repair the crack with some kind of adhesive, instead?

[i searched, but i couldn't find any related topics.]

thanks in advance.

Pretty sure it's part of the 0 lift aerodynamics, as well, it protects the engine from debris.

I don't think it'll hurt to remove it. Would make changing the oil a little easier. You could just tape the crack too.

It may help keep debris and dust out of the engine bay....a CAI/POp Charger filter would probably get pretty dusty.

I can attest to what RocketG35 said. I drove (still am, hah! I'm putting it back on this weekend though no matter what!! ...unless I get lazy or simply forget ) around with mine off because there's like 30 little attachment points that hold it up and I got lazy to put them all back on. I can tell you, my engine bay is FILTHY. Depending on where the car is sitting, once the fan kicks on it kicks dirt/dust everywhere.

Leave the cover on and repair it, or swap it with a loaner car, or get a new one, but don't drive without it.

Oh and that zero lift stuff...ehhh I can't really tell. I take my car up to 90mph-120mph on a daily basis and I don't notice a change in handling. Maybe at higher speeds it'll be more of a factor.

Yeah you can take it off. It just helps the air flow better under the car and keeps things clean. I have driven 100's of miles without mine on for various reasons.

thanks for the all responses guys. i'm going makeshift with some masking tape for now, until i have time to figure out a better solution.

i remember i'd left it off for a month the last time i did an oil change because i was too lazy to put it back on, and everything does get nasty dirty inside...

Yep...My flaps and comes undone sometimes when im going fast and starts scraping everything from the road. The plastic bolts have all broken off. I was thinking of losing all the plastic myself or go with chobbles idea
