Changing the Tranny fluid

I was wondering if anyone has changed their fluid to anything other than the dealer recommended fluid? I got a 03 sedan AT and I need to change my fluid soon. Wanted to know if its worth it to spend that kind of money at the dealer or just put synthetic in it? Also has anyone changed the differential fluid. I know that supposedly its good for th life of the car but thats hard to believe.
