Given that the rear diff does not have the cooling fins it should have anyway if you are spinning a lot where vdc has to kick on I guess the chances are pretty high it's that making the smell.

I don't believe the differntial has a vent pipe though.

My guess is a combo of brakes, clutch, and accessory belt.

No clutch on my car

accessory belt ? hmm it would happen all the time and it doesnt .

so that just leaves brakes & LSD (if it has a vent)

Any G Techs out there wanna comment ?

The VLSD is a closed and unventilated system, from all that I've read. And since I wasn't doing donuts or anything intensive, I am hard pressed to imagine the VLSD heating up to the point where the viscous fluid inside is evaporating. And again, my tires weren't spinning fast enough to get smoked. We need a G Tech to comment here.

Can't be LSD or clutch if the auto G's are experiencing the same thing--I thought only the 6MT's had LSD...I guess that would leave brakes, but I think that's questionable, as most time when my VDC kicked in during this winter storm, it wasn't slamming the brakes but instead sounded more like it was cutting fuel (rapid, clicking sound from the front). When VDC hits the brakes, you can hear the distinct ABS sound, and it's usually the rear brakes, because you can feel the rear swing back under you...but the smell comes from the front...

This is starting to concern me. I have the same problem with or without snow. I know that I have a slow oil leak somewhere but I'm starting to wonder if the two are unrelated. The smell is more like burning rubber than oil.

Maybe I'll hit up the dealer and see what they say. But they may just come back and say "it's normal"....

My 6MT definately has that same smell when I push her. I assumed it was just the VQ burning a little oil.

Mine would only smell when I have the defogs for the windshield on but when I change the mode to just the feet or body and feet the smell goes away. It only has the smell like rubber when I have the mode to my windshield defog mode. I just hope someone comes up with a answer on why it does that.

I run my front defog mode all the time and I never have that smell. I only have it when the VDC kicks on more often like when it snows.
