Can someone shed some light on DD aftermarket Nav units??? I'm under the impression that installation requires a different dash trim and soldering of a climate control unit??? Does this sound right?
Please elaborate on this for me guys. Again only interested in the install for a 05-05 because this seems the route I'd like to go.

Look HERE, some of the pics are bad, but you will get the idea.

You lose dual zone AC. It's a LOT of work.

 

Technically you don't lose dual-zone AC, but you will need to do some soldering to get the button moved over from your current control panel. A DDIN swap is a lot of work, but no harder than any other stereo install.

DDIN navi is also lower in the dash which could make it more difficult to see, but I like that location, attracts less attention when you're on the road.

 

I have the stock Nav and I love it. The one thing that is unmatched is the 3D BirdView. I've used plenty of other navs and this view is by far the most useful. You can see what's around you and what's coming up (close or at a distance) much better than most Nav units. Another benefit you get is the additional vahicle info (fuel economy, specific door/trunk open warning, maintenance reminders, etc) and if I'm not mistaken the '06 is faster with the newer and nicer menu graphics.

 

A lot of these 6 MT's I see for sale always have had it replaced... is that just bad maintenance? Or do they go out every 120k or so?

 

Most likely it's that people don't know how to drive a MT.

I will say the only thing I don't like about the oem nav is the user interface. I prefer touchscreen, and the joystick input sucks. But once it's it....the nav is pretty good. If you take a wrong turn, it redirects pretty quick. I use mine constantly, so no complaints other than the input method. And when you don't need it, hit the button and it disappears.

I am into oem setups, so a $200 garmin suction cupped to the dash is unacceptable to me. I hate loose things in my interior as I broke two teeth off in a rollover on a suction cupped navi unit. So I avoid those setups.

I have been considering changing the head unit to a dd touchscreen unit. Most are navi.. So I dunno how I feel about having two navigation setups in the car. of course there are issues with dd installs in nav cars...such as keeping the navi voice, and the oem dash kit for nav cars notmbeing available requiring you to mod a non-nav dash kit. Needless to say if you plan on installing a touchscreen dd kit.....don't get nav.

 

Not true.

They don't ALL use oil. Mine doesn't. I have 92,000 very HARD miles and I use about 4oz between 7500 mile oil changes. You should have them checked out and if you buy one, you should make them sign a "Notarized" paper saying that if it uses oil, you get your money back. Other than that, go for it.

BTW, acording to the Grinch, it's a 39 and a half foot pole...

 

Id also be worried about the oil consumption problems. Granted not all do but its a factor.

 

The best option to check for in my opinion is the in car bluetooth so you can talk and shift at the same time. I've got an 06 6MT with 70k and have had no oil consumption issues whatsoever. The flashing rev light is annoying, but you can change the setpoint to 8K RPM and never see it light up. Its also good for scaring valet drivers who don't know any better.

 

Very true, they all don't consume oil. I think at last count, something like 15% of the revups on the road have had the short block replaced. I'm just left to wonder how others are on the road where the owners don't know their car is consuming oil and/or Nissan told them that 1 QT every 2K miles is normal. It also seems like many of these cars don't have an issue for a while, then all of a sudden they start drinking oil. Even Non-rev VQs have a history of this. You can blame Nissan and thier use of soft rings in an attempt to improve efficency.

 

Even some 5AT's use oil.

I know myself and others have chimed in that theirs use about 1 quart per oil change....less than the TSB would allow for an engine replacement.

Mine uses 1 qt per 3500 miles.

 

does anyone know why the revups eat oil?
if they only replace the shortblock, I assume it is a ring prob?

 

I would think the soft rings are for the "Nickasil" coating on the cylinders. These things are not sleeved.
