Clicking From Shifter when Applying Brake

I've never noticed this sound before... I have an AT, with the shifter in P and the ignition in either acc, on or start, when I apply the brake I heat a ticking/clicking sound from the shifter area... it's faint when the key is turned to the first position (acc I think), and more pronounced in on possition and when started... A friend of mine suggested it might be the solenoid that prevents shifting into gear without applying brakes might be going out.

Has anyone else experienced this or have idea what it might be?...

I think it's to disengage the parking lock. Try pushing the parking button before hitting the brake and apply the brake, you can feel it disengage.

This is bugging me... I'm afraid I'm gonna have to take it to dealer just to be sure it's not an issue.

thats the safety mechanism that wont let you shift out of park unless you have the brakes applied...aint no big deal to bring to the dealer so they can offer you a free car wash and f uck up your car...Trust me, I have that too and figured it out long ago...

Of course I never let dealer wash my car. And as far as the safety mechanism... yes I understand there is a solenoid in place so that you cannot shift out of park without applying brakes, but it has never made a clicking sound. I'm actually surprised to find that others' clicks/tick as well... however I'm still not sure if the sound I have is normal (or the same as what you two are saying you have).

Thanks for the responses though.

It's amazing that you haven't heard this on any auto before. It's pretty standard so yeah you shouldn't worry.
