New Owner Questions

I just bought an 03 black sedan from the dealership here in New Orleans. It's an automatic and has 43k miles. Occasionally when I hit the brakes the VDC off, ABS, and SLIP light come on. The lights stay on until the next time the car is started. Has anyone had a similar problem before? The previous owner also slightly dented the rear bumper, the shape is only slightly warped but the paint has stress cracks from the bumper bending. Will these polish out or can I use some very fine wet sandpaper? Any ideas are appreciated. Also the headlights are slightly hazed over, is there a good product for getting them crystal clear again?

Ryan

It's funny all the things one notices after owning a car after a few days. I too had similar complaints.

In regards to your dash lights, does it only happen with the VDC button turned off?

The headlight issue is common for Nissan cars that were not garaged. I have the same problem with my Nissan Frontier. The best alternative I have to date is that new lights are fairly common on Ebay for around $100.

For the headlights, the best solution I've found is to use 3M Plastic Polish -- you can get it at various web sites; some NAPA stores also have it. It costs around $10 and easily removed the haze from my 03.5 G's lights.

For the SLIP/VDC light, I'd take it into the dealer -- that's not normal behavior. Based on your mileage, you may have some warranty left.

No, all three lights are coming on at the same time when applying the brakes, I have messed around with the button after the lights come on but they were unaffected.

Check your brake fluid level.

I have used Meguiar's PlasticX on hazed headlights with good success.

Take the car to your nearest infiniti dealership for the dash warns I am pretty sure in your state you have a 1 month 1200 mile warranty from the dealership you purchased the car from if your bumper to bumper warranty is gone from Infiniti. The headlight haze is common especially in hot humid climates I polish mines about every 3 months here in Hawaii and I have a garage.

Ditto. Just be careful about getting it on any softer plastics. This stuff, for example, is too abrasive for a Clear Bra.

Yep, ditto the above post about brake fluid level. That is almost certainly the problem causing the dash lights to glow. Infiniti's front brake cylinders really seem to draw down the fluid level as the pads wear. Normal of course, but the fluid level sensor trips very easily when this happens, hence all the warning lights. My experience is that you probably have another 5,000 miles left on the pads, so just top off the fluid a little bit. If you put too much in, the master cylinder will overflow when the cylinders are adjusted back for new pads.

Infiniti issued a TSB about polishing the lenses to get the haze off. They recommend 3M Plastic Polish #39010 for this I haven't had to do this yet). Enjoy the car!

Another + on the brake fluid level. If it's too low it will turn on those lights. If you are right on the edge of the lower threshold it may trigger while driving.

As for the headlights, get some 3M or Maguire’s plastic cleaner and some plastic polish. It will take that off. From there if you add the 3M clear bra over the headlights it won't come back. Mine were bad when I got the car and it kept coming back until I put those on. Now over a year later I have not had the problem return.
