The wire runs through the child seat anchor point into the trunk. You can't get cleaner than that. The reception is no better or worse than having it on the roof.

My antenna is the stock (factory installed) one. Its on my 06 sedan. Its Functional.
i am sure you could get one of these to replace the rat.
