Stuck in snowbank

well. i was coming back from canada. a huge storm hit us and he roads were partly covered in snow. I had AWD mode on and all season tires

I come up to a jeep cherokee going 35-40 mph behind a truck in a 60 mph zone.
I was behind these two vehicles for a good 20 minutes

a big pickup truck...i think a F350 with snow mobiles in tow tailgates me

he than proceeds to pass both my G, the Cherokee in front, AND the truck at once.

so I thought i might as well do the same.

the lines on my side turned dotted and I started to pass.
I passed the cherokee first and waited for another time to pass the truck

the lines turned dotted again and I started to pass.

I get up to the cab of the truck and another car coming in the opposite direction pops up.

so I move infront of the cab of the truck and the G starts to fish tail.

I nudged my brakes a bit and I slowed down to control the loose tail but I figured that I would be slowing down too much for the truck behind me so I pulled off to the shoulder.

stopped at a snow bank on the shoulder at like 5mph and needed to have my fellow spartans in the back seat push me out. no damage, just a bump that I pushed right back and some broken foam. I just still cant believe my front lip didnt crack... I guess it kind of worked like a pseudo snow plow lol

well anyways. I was just extremely embarrased. Neither did the truck or Cherokee slow down to peak and see if we were alright. obv we all counted our blessings - it could have been way worst but I assume I did everything I could to avoid an accident. I'm still really bummed. I vowed never to pass w/o snow tires again.

anyways, yea... thats the moral of the story. i'm so sick of snow.

I saw no AWD G's in canada...just RWD' w/ snow tires...that pissed me off (in nyc there are only AWD w/ all seasons) I thought that b/c I had AWD I didnt have to buy snow...I guess not. that was the first time the G lost so much traction in the snow. I guess I will get all seasons...what a waist AWD is!!

for everyone in the northeast, do things like this happen alot?

I don't think it matters if your car has AWD or not...if you don't have the proper tires, your not going to get traction. I have an 05x with avon m550 A/S and I haul @ss through the show with no issues at all! I even pass SUVs and trucks on the highway (unplowed) and I get puzzled looks and a lot of finger pointing. I'm sure they are all saying, "That guy is just askin for it" but that has yet to happen and like I said, my car is a champ in the snow. I have yet to get stuck in snow, stuck in a parking spot, or lose any type of traction since I've put on the m550 A/S. They rock!

yea, that is what I have painfully learned. I haven't found myself stuck in a parking spot yet (just VDC off + gas works).

next winter I will pick up a set of snow tires. I now know for sure that they will be worth it

I'm just glad that you are ok man and your car is still ok too. I know how you feel about the snow. I live in Minnesota so there are a lot of snow here too. It is a pain in the butt to deal w/snow when driving. A few weeks ago there was a big snow storm here and man I'm so glad that I own a g35x. The car handle very good in the snow but I do hate one thing for sure, the stock tires suck so bad driving in snow. Whenever this tires wore out I will get snow tires for sure.

RWD with snow tires is just about as good as AWD with snow tires, the tires make the real difference. AWD is better in rain i guess. I mean don't get me wrong AWD with snow tires is the best, but difference is negligble over RWD with snow tires.

I think the biggest benefit with AWD is getting in and out of a parking spot that isn't plowed. I get spots when I go places b/c I'm not hesitant to park on top of the snow. Everyone else just finds a spot that is plowed It also kicks @ss in the rain too. Saved my life when I started to hydroplane on the highway.

again this AWD pops up.
i beleived that AWD turns off if u pass the 12mph limit. so going on the free way with AWD mode on u still going pass 12mph so AWD isn't really with u there.

I don't think I ever mentioned that I drove with the AWD function on. AWD kicks in if it senses slipping...not just when you have that button on. As quoted from the dealer when I bought my car...regardless of your speed...the awd will kick in if needed..

I think you need to slow down in the rain and in snow. It's people like yourself that cause major accidents because they are traveling too fast for conditions and are under the belief that their car's drivetrain can defy the general laws of physics. Common sense is the great equalizer and AWD has nothing to do with whether or not you'll hydroplane. It's all in the tires, the depth of the water, and most importantly, your speed.

Advice noted. Anything else? BTW...brand new avon m550 A/S rock and kick @ss when your doing 90mph down the highway that isn't plowed It was even better when I took it up to 150mph and spun out of control and almost took out a light pole. In that sense...yes I would be driving too fast for conditions.

Since I don't drive like that, please get off my back about my driving. I don't drive like I'm Superman and I know to ease up if road conditions aren't good. Like every guy on this forum...I love my car too much to let anything happen to it.

When I say I zoom past other drivers...its all relative to the speed of the other motorists. If they are going 5mph down the road and I'm able to go at 15-20mph with no issues....is that speeding and driving wrecklessly by your definition?

I don't need you to preach to me about how I am the type of person that causes accidents...been driving for 9 years just fine and haven't even gotten a single ticket in my life. So please preach somewhere else bro.

Neal, the best thing you can really do is buy a set of snow

tires. I had a set that I swapped on to my A4 every winter. Then the winter before last I decided not to. Figured I had all wheel drive, it probably wasn't going to snow that much this winter anyway. But I do live in an area where there are big hills, and even with all wheel drive, i just couldn't make it up the hill. I tried multiple streets and to no avail. Now I have the G35 and its just rear wheel drive, but believe me, I will have a set of winters on come next winter. I even convinced my dad to put a set on his all wheel drive porsche for the winter. He wont be going through anything over a few inches deep, but (moral of the story) a set of winter tires will help you with traction on hills, turning, and more importantly braking especially coming down a hill.

most definetely. its just a shame that AWD is only good for comign out of parking spots and that the rest of the year all that ATTESSA does is suck gas
