Engine Idle Problems?

When I am idle in the G35, there is a noticable tremor which just slightly rocks the car. Does this happen to you guys? I only have 3000 miles and this has happened for a while. My engine is not overheated, and I didnt expect this to happen to such a new car, whose pistons should be firing correctly. What do you guys think?

Re: Engine Idle Problems?

You may have a dirty injector or 2-- try some fuel injector cleaner (good quality).
Another issue I can think of is a vacuum leak. Have you installed an intake, or Crawford Plenum? If so, there may be a loose connection or bolt somewhere there.
Lastly, a bad batch of gas with cause a rough idle, if the issue has recently arisen.
If it persists, I'd recommend a visit to your dealer.

Re: Engine Idle Problems?

I am a little hesitant about using a fuel injector cleaner, but I will look into it. Also, I always use 93 octane from reputable places, and the effect is still the same. I havent performed any modifications either. It really seems like the engine mount is loose, or like the RPM's "hiccup" at times during idle which kinda gives you that 'bouncing feeling.' Thanks for the ideas though.

i get it also. you will notice it only does it once the rpms drop bellow 700rpm into the 600-650 range. 8/10 of the times the rpm will only get that low with the AC off. i know exactly what you are talking about though. im pretty sure its normal since the engine is in a V shape or something like that...

What does that mean "since the engine is in a V shape"? The roughest running engines I ever had where in-line 4cyl!

Re: Engine Idle Problems?

Actually, an inline 6-cylinder is naturally balanced. I4's, V6's, and V8's require counterweights to balance them. Since a V12 is basically 2 I6's, its also naturally balanced)

Don't ask me why, I read a big long article on it somewhere. I forget where it is.

I guess Nissan didn't know much about "balancing" when they built my '73 Datsun Pickup, geezuz, that thing rocked at idle like nothing I've ever owned!

Ryo:

Not sure if this is the article to which you're referring, but it tells you more than you ever want (or not) about engine configuration and smoothness.

Re: Engine Idle Problems?

Try a different kind of gasoline. I read an article in Ward's Auto World that Chevron gas has the least emissions. Before I using Chevron I was using Union 76. After running with Chevron to about 10 tankfuls the smoothness at idle as returned. I am currently use Shell gas here in SoCal. I am getting better mileage than when I was using Chevron. I am sticking with Shell. Also Shell was mentioned in the Ward's auto world article as having met the gasoline requirement standards. My friend recently switched to Shell and is experiencing better gas mileage too. Hope this helps because it sure helped me.
