Car warm up

Do you warm your G up the whole way every time you drive it or just in the morning? All year long or just in the winter??

I agree with SixFive. Studies up here in the Frozen North show that the best way to warm up your engine is to just let it idle for 30 to 60 seconds and drive slowly until it is up to temperature. It's supposed to be faster to warm up, easier on gas, and better for the engine than letting it sit until it's fully warm. Of course, if the inside of your windows is too frosty to see through....

Re: Car warm up

Yup, I let the car warm up for about 20-30 seconds depending on how cold the weather is. Then I drive it easy shifting at 3K until that first mile is past and the coolant temp is up close to normal.

Re: Car warm up

I like to use the warm up method that my 78 year old neighbor uses. He starts his car and immediatly runs it to about 4K rpm. He told me that this lets the car know that he means business. Now the key is to keep it revved up at 4K for about a minute. Now if the car trys to stall after that, just give it a quick stab on the gas pedal. Again, this lets the car know who's boss. Bonus points are awarded if you have a any loose belts that squeal.

So the next time your G starts giving you some $hit, you let it know who's in charge.

Re: Car warm up

Very interesting theories. I generally let mine warm up any time I am in it. Rain, shine, sleet or snow. I may have to reconsider. Thanks for the insight.

Re: Car warm up

I haven't left a car sit and warm up since I got my first fuel injected vehicle, back in the late 80's, I take it easy for a few miles, but that's about it. Those old carburated cars used to run very poorly when cold, LOL, especially the old Datsun PU I owned!

Re: Car warm up

my experience is If you try to drive a ice cold G35 auto hard, you are not going to get anything out of it anyway. my g is so sluggish when the engine is cold.

Re: Car warm up

A fuel injected car does not provide enough of a load at idle to warm up the car quickly enough. There is more wear on the engine as it sits there then if you drive the car slowly until it reaches operating temperature.

Our manual states letting the car sit for 30 seconds on start-up... then drive away... but slowly.

Re: Car warm up

You don't want to drive a cold engine hard. It's not good for it... the oil isn't up to temp and can't get into the places it needs to quickly, and the sluggishness is also cause by emissions equipment that feeds unburned gasses back into the engine during warmup to reburn it.

Re: Car warm up

With any engine, you don't want to drive it hard until it is warmed up. This is due to the oil and liquids operating at their optimal temps as well as the engine block, heads, chains, etc not being fully expanded to their full sizes when the engine is normal.
