Question checking manual transmission fluid

So...I have a 2005 6M. I am doing the 18,750 mile checks. .how do you guys check the manual transmission fluid level. For maintanence purposes do you just check for leaks or do you actually check the level? I am assuming you check the fluid level at the filler plug. Is it necessary to replace the gasket on this one and what kind/size of gasket does it use? Is there any other way like on the Automatics? Also does it matter if the car is warmed up or not? Thanks.

I agree, visual inspection for leaks is enough.
