Raced a 745Li
Raced a 745Li
Tonight i was going out to eat with my parents, and a mid 35ish- 45ish guy was in a red late 90's 745Li.
Well he looked like he wanted to race me from the stop light, so i kinda played along, and chirped my tires a little bit to see if he was serious, and we took off.
Needless to say he had the jump, but the second i hit third i was infront of him. But we shut them down at about 90 mph, and gave each other the thumbs up.
I thought that car would have been faster, but the second i got into 3-4 i was gaining fast and then passed him. Does anybody know the statistics on the 745Li. thanks,
Brian

Re: Raced a 745Li
umm, did you race a 745li or 745il? Theres a preety reasonable difference between the two, the li is the newer one that has the furutistic looking sytle, and the il is the older one. The li (newer one) is preety quick, 325bhp, and has about the same statistics in 0-60/1/4 as a G35 sedan auto. I don't know the stats on the il, but considering you beat him ill bet he was in an il.
Re: Raced a 745Li
You got to remeber the 745Li is a lot heavier than the G. It has 325 hp and weighs 4464 lbs. That is a pretty big boat. The power to weight ratio is 13.73 whereas the G's is around 13.07. That's pretty close. So even though the 745 has more horsepower it is also a lot heavier. There are other factors of course but you get the point.

Re: Raced a 745Li
Hello:
As an FYI, the iL vs Li means nothing. BMW uses standard codes for their major option groups:
i = Interior, leather package
L = long wheelbase
C = coupe
s = sport package
What I think you are thinking of are previous versions of the 4.0 and 4.4 liter motor that were running 282bhp instead of the current 325bhp.

Hey skyline350gts
Respectfully said: The 7 series in the lates 90's were actually either 730, I believe also there was a 735, were six cylinders and the 740 was an eight cylinder. The 745 is the newer model 2000ish and only come in 8 cylinders with the exception the 12 cyl. 760.
My brother has a 740i, it is a defintely heavier car, but It is an incredible handling car for its size. Don't sleep on them on the highway with an experienced driver.
All the best,

I don't think it has been said right yet. There are two models of the 7 series:
745i - is the regular 7 series body. V8 engine
745iL - is a longer wheel base & body (i.e. bigger back seat) & obviousy heavier. Otherwise the cars are the same.
(there also may be a 760, which is a V12)

Re: Raced a 745Li
The newer (E65) 745Li is pretty fast. I raced one in my 540/6MT with Dinan stage 2 mods and he was right there....maybe catching me a little at 130+ but I took him off the line. I also test drove one...very impressive. My 540 is a lot faster than my G35 so I think you raced an older 740 (E30).
Late 1990's 7-series
Since my two cars are a 1999 740 i Sport, and a 2004 G35, thought I'd chime in!
The new body style 745 (with more hp) did not come out until 2002.
From 1995-2001, the two models where the 740 which BMW specs show a 0-60 time of 6.9s. There is also a 12 cylinder 750 (not as common, and not particularily faster off the line, but faster once up to speed).
740iL - just a long-wheel base model of the 740i.
The 740 had 282 horsepower (not 325 hp like the newest model), tremendous torque, but weighs 4200 pounds. I think a G35 would normally beat a regular 740 in acceleration.
From 1999-2001, there is also a Sport version of the 740. For the long-wheel base 740iL, the Sport option is just cosmetic
changes (no faster).
But the shorter wheel base 740i Sport should give the G35 a run for the money in acceleration. Same engine, but shorter final gear ratio (improves accelaration, but decreases gas mileage), a high stall torque converter, lower front suspension, stiffer suspension, staggered and bigger rims, ... Magazines have measured 0-60 in the 6.1s range (BMW specs more conservative). With high torque, a 740i Sport would give you a run for the money.
But most 7-series are luxury cars first, sports cars second.
