X-ing through the SNOW
X-ing through the SNOW
I've had my G35x for a little over a month now. My baby has 1050 miles on her. I live in Northern NJ and I got about 6-7 inches of snow last night into this morning. I walked my dog last night around 11:30 and saw there was about 5 inches of snow on the ground. I thought what better time to test the all-wheel-drive. Nobody on the road and fresh snow! To start, I have an assigned parking spot at my town house complex. My spot is on a little hill. My old BMW would get stuck trying to get out of the spot. I put the G in reverse hit the gas and it moved without any hesitation. Good start! I left the complex and headed down the block without any problems. The VCD light came on now and then and the slip light did the same. But no issues. I decided to turn the VCD off and see how it preformed. I came to a full stop and floored the car. She took off like a bat out of hell. There was slippage, but the car moved. I was very satisfied so far. I then decided to put it into the manual shifting with the VCD off and head to a big parking lot
) . On my way there I encountered a downhill where I shifted down to 2nd gear. For a second there I thought I was going to lose control of the car. The back started coming around and I was about to hit a turn. My stomach dropped....but then the car straightened out. PHEW! I immediately put the VCD back on and was under control again. For those of you on this forum that have made comments about the car with the VCD off, I agree it can get scary. But it can be fun too. I arrive at the large parking lot, turn off the VCD and put it in manual transmission. The first thing I realized is doughnuts is something you can't do with the all wheel drive. You point that car in a direction give it some gas and the car goes. The X works great. For those of you that don't know the X, it has a snow button which sends power 50-50 to front and back tires. In that mode the car accelerates better in snow then my fathers Lexus RX 330. Anyway, I drove up, down, sideways, backwards and any other way I could find and the car was great in the snow. It seemed like the more aggressive I drove at low speeds the greater the car preformed. It would just dig in. If I went slowly through a turn the car would plow, but if I gave it gas the car would make the turn. Since I've never owned an all wheel vehicle the plowing takes a little to get use to. But once I had that figured out….damn was I impressed with this car in the snow. I have all season tires on my car and I couldn't imagine how well it would do with a set of snow tires.
I GIVE THE G35X A BIG THUMBS UP!
If it's a G it's 4 me!

Re: X-ing through the SNOW
A tip on AWD, as with Front wheel drive, if you are plowing, get on the gas. I know you never dream of doing this in the Bmer, but AWD is different animal. You need to get the front wheel spinning to regain control.

Re: X-ing through the SNOW
I've had by G35x for 3 weeks - 2000 miles (including the first 1000 miles drive home from New York to Chicago after the purchase for $2500 less than Chicago dealers!)
We've had one good snowstorm and I concur with everything stated above. I felt more secure in the G35x than my Xterra for "driving" in the snow. I know the Xterra would win for trudging through the deep thick snow, however. That thing is like a tank, especially in 4WD Low. The low center of gravity in the sedan with AWD compared to 4WD SUVs makes it feel much safer on the highway in the snow, however. Back to the G35x....
The Snow Mode seemed unstoppable at low speeds and above 12mph the AWD seemed flawless. The VDC and Slip kicked in appropriately. I never felt out of control. Around turns I could see the snow flying up from the front wheels and still feel the rear wheels gripping. I gave up an FWD Acura 3.2TL for the G35x and there's no comparison in my mind!
I love this car!
