They transponder key is what makes it hard to steal our (and similarly equipped) cars. Remote starters need to have a chipped key in the vicinity to tell the computer it is OK to start. The installer will likely cut off, or otherwise destroy, the blade part of the key. And it all gets hidden under the dash.

Usually, only the dealer can program it, but apparently there are some locksmiths with the very expensive device that is needed. There was a thread about this a while back.

When I had my Python remote alarm put in I did NOT have the remote starter option done. The cost for the extra key with programming and the wasting of gas and adding to pollution) whenever I would run it tipped the balance to not do it. The car is hot for a few minutes in the summer and cold for a few minutes in the winter, but I'm surviving.

my local ace hardware can do it
they charge around $70 for key+labor (but they wont cut a key you provide)

I bought a blank off ebay for $10 and the dealer quoted me $55 to cut/program it.. that route is a little cheaper, but more hassle than going to Ace.. the dealer said I would have to leave my car for 1/2 a day.. thats a bit of a drag

Does anyone know how to program the actual key to the car ? Without having to go to the dealer ... Or do you need a special device or computer to plug into the car ?

yes there is a special computer it kinda looks like a scanner. But any good automotive lock Smith should have one.
