Cell phone placement problem
Re: Cell phone placement problem
I've been toying with different ideas and I think I like Tinman's idea best. I can't see spending $50, let alone $30 on a solution to this. Plus, I already have the clip and the adhesive.
Tinman - have you had any trouble with the adhesive not holding, because of the texture on the dash? Like in hot weather?

Really like the way the pedals look! Did your speaker covers come that way? Mine are just the willow interior material...

Re: Cell phone placement problem
Um, er , maybe this is the epitome to frugality but I have a very simple solution that might be a tad ghetto.
Perhaps a small piece of velcro, attached to the dashboard and a small piece attached to the phone. Okay it might not be the poshest setup but it will work.
I velcro my remotes in the family room in my house to back of
the TV, where they can't be seen. Now they no longer reside on the top of the TV and they don't fall on the floor anymore.
One other thing, what about the hands free attachment? I listen to music also (at loud levels) but in the interest of safety I use that all the time and always hear the phone ringing in my ear.
my 2 cents

Re: Cell phone placement problem
I got a black magnetic flat panel cell phone holder from Brookstone for $13 last Thanksgiving. Now I can't find a link on the brookstone.com site - sorry.
PROS:
* Ultra simple one-handed release - just pull. No levers or catches.
* Clean elegant look. Nobody even notices the attachment.
* Mounted next to the driver's door handle, I never accidentally leave it in the car. Reaching for the handle reminds me to grab it.
* Phone screen is visible while driving
* Antenna is vertical for max signal strength, and located next to the window, instead of buried in some signal shielding cavity.
* Cheap!
* Nothing attached to the phone.
CONS
* Only certain batteries are magnetic. I think only nickel-metal hydrides, and maybe not all of them. Mine is marked "Lithium", but I don't believe it. You have to test the actual battery to be sure. Still, a new $30 battery would be worth it, considering how perfectly the holder works
* The back side of the flexible holder pad is a peel-and-stick adhesive. I've had it only 2 months, and can't say how it will survive an Atlanta summer parking lot. Lots of mornings this winter have been in the 20s here. I suspect it will hold up...
* If your phone battery is not magnetic and you don't want to get a magnetic one, the kit comes with a pair of quarter-sized flat stick-on magnets. But they do add 1 - 2 mm of thickness.

Look to the left.. you'll see his G35 key fob behind that one. Must have 2 sets of car keys on the keychain.

I just use the ash tray, it works perfect for my phone. I have a small Motorola flip phone though but sits just right in there. I can see it light up (at night anyway) and it's easy to access.
