Re: Why gas cap on the right? (Corrected)
I thought somebody might get me on the coupe dual. By 'able to' I meant 'capable of'. Stillen for instance does offer a true dual for both sedan and coupe, but in the case of the coupe the pipe is able to route all the way to the back on the side even where the gas fill tube is (where sedan runs are all on the left).
What this tells me is that, although it looks like they had to do some pipe bending to make it work, exhaust can't be the reason at least in this case.
And even if it was, we would still be back to why.

I also like the right. I try not to stretch it to the other side of my car either...or if I do, I sit there like a dork holding the fuel cable over the roof of my car.

My salesman told me the reason, it is for safety. Some day you may find yourself on the shoulder of a highway, putting a gallon of gas from a can into your car because you misjudged when you would run out. At that time, you will be much safer on the right side of the car, farther away from the traffic.
Makes sense to me.

beat me to the answer. Thorwolf is correct. BMWs first came out with this concept in the 90s. If, for some reason, run out of fuel, you normally pull over on the right shoulder. If you needed to refill the gas, and the gas cap was on the left, it would be very dangerous as you are in harm's way of traffic. By having it on the right side (passenger), you are out of harm's way. It's a safety thing.

I had heard the safety thing too, but it just doesn't add up. There has to be more to it or everybody would do it (at least those that are sold in right hand drive countries). At the very least Nissan/Infiniti cars would all have it on the right? However, all new Nissan cars, except the Z have it on the left. Even the Infiniti I30 has it on the left.
So maybe Nissan just picked up on it and the older models have not been redesigned to make the change. Except the Titan also has it on the left. So that can't be either.
I'm thinking more that each manufacturer just provides a fairly equal mix to help with the mix when refueling, since 99% of people will wait rather than backup or pull the hose over.
Amazing how much thought and talk such a minor issue brings up!

Yeah, that is a good response. But as the driver of the car, you still have to get out of the car to be able to fill the tank! So you still could be in harms way. I would just call AAA...I think the safety thing was an afterthought.

That may be why BMW puts in on the right, but considering the radio/climate control placement, I'd say Infiniti put the gas cap on the driver's side for Japan, and didn't bother switching it over for North America.
