The fact that INFINITI made the transmission cold checkable too makes me a happy DIYer.

I'd still check it warm after driving around to make sure the fluid gets in all the paths of the transmission parts like the torque converter.

That doesn't seem right. The "H" and "L" basically mean "high" and "low". Oil level right in the middle means it's dead-on.

It's even worse with fresh, new oil that's really "clean". Well, this applies to most cars actually.... Trick I know is lay the dipstick on a paper towel (like lengthwise along the radiator) and then "pull" the dipstick horizontally either away from you or towards you. It should leave a "streak". Keep the dipstick lined up to use the markings on it for reference.

One side of the dipstick has hashmarks - use those when the ATF is hot. The fluid level should be within the hash marks. When it's cold, you use the two small notches or cut-outs for checking the oil level. It's best to flip the dipstick over so that the hashmarks aren't in the way as they do overlap.

Thing is, what Nissan considers "cold" isn't really cold, let alone ambient temperature (in most places). I think the temperature range they use for cold is 90-120º F.

I don't think it's actually H/L. Just a set of hash marks on the dip stick. Top is full, bottom is outside the safety margins. Middle means it's low, but within operating range.
If you do your own oil changes, dumping in 5qts puts it right at the top of the hash marks.

That's odd^^

I buy the 5+ quart jugs (not sure how much the plus adds, think it's ~1/2 qt.) and they fill it right to the top of the hash marks. Been this way since I bought the G 9 years ago.

Note the two carets at the end of his comment. That points to second post above. One caret would point to your post.

I think that's the '03-'04 dipstick, traditionally oil.level is ALWAYS filled to the top of the hashmark, the more volume in the crankcase the better, never fill to the middle of the hashmark.

Well this just got confusing. All I was saying is that for some, 5 qts. refills the oil to the top of the dipstick and on our G it takes ~5.5 qts.

But I did learn what a caret is tonight so thanks fellas for the education. I had no idea that one indicated the post immediately above and 2 referred 2 posts above.
