How to measure the engine Oil level

Wow can they make a more crooked dip stick???

Anyway I am having a fun time measuring the oil level on my G35 sedan. Any suggestions.

Everytime I measure it I see an oil streak that goes at least 2" above the high mark but it does not seem totally filled with oil. The portion where there is oil that seems to be completely encompassing the dipstick is maybe slightly lower than the or around the lower level of the dip stick.

So my questions is what is the best way to measure correct oil level or how to best interpret this THANKS

It's usually easier to let the oil settle for at least 10 or 15 minutes. Or even do it when the engine is cool. Just check your level after an oil change when you know you have the proper amount in to compare to when you check it cold.

Re: How to measure the engine Oil level

Everybody I've ever seen, dealer mechanics included, follow the below-listed procedure:

Pull dip-stick.
Wipe dip-stick clean.
Replace dip-stick.
Say a prayer.
Pull dip-stick.
Look at dip-stick from every possible angle and distance.
Swear.
Wipe dip-stick clean.
Replace.

Repeat above steps 6 times minimum.

Tell customer the oil level looks good.

Close the hood. Done!

Re: How to measure the engine Oil level

ha ha ha very funny

I am doing the same thing

I have tried it both with the car cold and warm(although manual says car should be warm and let be cool for at least 10 mins)
I am having problem as I see oil streak and sometime some of it only on one side of the dipstick maybe even 2" above the H mark but as I a said it is not solid as it should be when fully submerged in oil. I do see fully submerged portion but that is start around the L low level of the dip stick.

I guess it maybe be due to the weird shape of the stick???
comments any feedback that will help. Last thing I want to do is to drive with too much or little oil.

Thanks

Re: How to measure the engine Oil level

I did my oil last weekend. With the filter change it took exactly 5 quarts. To measure the level, I run the car until it's in the middle of the temp range (normal). Then shut it off for 5 min and read it. It read about 3/4 full on the Crazystraw they use for a dipstick.

After parking, I wait at least 30 minutes, I find that the longer I wait, the less oil streaks I see.

Do it in the morning when the car is cold. Thats the only time I can get a reading.

I have always checked my oil in the morning, that's how I was brought up! Oh, and BTW, I bought one of those little "head" lights to use for such things, makes finding the camoflaged hole much easier!

Reviving an old thread here, but I looked thru many threads and none of them had a clear answer.

I checked my oil level after the car had been sitting all night, so with cold oil. The level of oil was exactly in between the H and L marks on the dipstick. Does that mean its a little low or do I just assume the level will expand and rise to the H mark when the oil heats up?

Checking cold is the best way.

The distance between the H and L is a little more than a quart. You're roughly a 1/2 qt low. If anything, that level will go down when you start the car since oil will be up in the head and not settled like when cold.

So basically, I want the oil level to show H when checked cold...right?

Check it every once in a while and see if it's dropping. If it's near a quart low at oil change time it's no biggie.

Alright thanks.

Its just a bit weird this car requires oil level checks with a cold engine.

It doesn't necessarily REQUIRE it but the hatches on the dipstick are pretty shallow and don't hold oil well, you need good light and a few wipes of the dipstick to get a good reading hot but I usually just recommend cold since a cold check is pretty much idiot proof.
