Possible to upgrade '05 factory navigation software to '06?

I'm sure this is possible, but what would it take to upgrade an installed factory 2005 navigation system to the 2006 version? Im not talking about the map data, im talking about the entire software/operating system that drives the navigation system. I would assume the DVD-rom drive and LCD screen would be the same as previous years. Im under the impression that the 2006 navigation was considerably the best than all previous years. I have no problems with the 2005 navigation system, but just for kicks want to see what it would be worth to upgrade.

I am likely the only person in the world w/ an '05 navi in my '06 so I think I can answer your question. To change to the '06, you'll need the DVD drive and at least the connector harness. The pin outs changed from '05 - '06 but the overall connections between the screen, stereo, antenna, and DVD-brain are the same.

You would have to basically pull each wire out of the connector in your '05 and put them into the individual holes on the '06 connectors. IIRC there are two connectors w/ the wire split between them. The alternative is to cut up your harness which I wouldn't recommend.

Definitely possible if you can get your hands on a unit and the harness as well as the pin removal tool which is pretty rough. I recommend finding a shop that specializes in KA/SR swaps and find out where they get their removal tool from b/c the hardest part of my install was getting the pins/wires out of the connectors w/o destroying the connector or the tool.

Sell the '05 and buy an identically equipped '06? Less headache...but a lot more cost.

If you have the unit, harness, and tool I could see it as taking less than 2 hours. I may do it if I ever see a unit come up for cheap. Otherwise, I'll live w/ the graphics etc. To be honest, '06 navi's are going to be very rare. Only 1 year of production and not that many people bought it as an option. Number of totalled ones w/ intact navi's is going to very miniscule.

Yeah i figured that only one year of production would make it harder getting my hands on one, especially when not too many order navigation to begin with. So from what you are saying, basically the navigation system unit is housed with the DVD drive? That doesnt seem to bad if thats true. This wouldnt require pulling apart my interior then would it?

You would still have to gut your passenger side dash. That shouldn't take all that long...20-30 min the first time w/ the service manual. Other than that, the drive unit + harness plugs are all you would really need. If you're really skilled you could solder the wires directly to the pins but that's a bit permanent and difficult given the spacing.

I'm not totally sure but other '06 model Nissan/Infiniti units may work similarly but that's a good bit tougher to determine.
