Previous Impala owners? Help!!!

I have been trying to convince my parents to get a G35x for a while now, but they don't seem to like the price difference between the G and a new Impala LS. I know that these cars are not very comparable, but they like the features of the G35 and they like the price of the Impala. What are a few major problems of the Impala besides being slow?

Uhhh....for starters it's a Chevy, reliability issues. All you need to do is check consumer reports. They are very different cars. It depends what your parents want (I know what you want). Good luck!

In some urban police fleets (where the beefier police pkg suspension models typically see 20K+ miles per year), the front suspension (alignment, CV, etc..) is prone to weakening and failure, and they're difficult to keep in alignment.... and these are significantly heavier duty than the "civilian" Impalas.

Are you just now of driving range, and want your parents to get one so YOU can drive it?

The G35 would hopefully be more reliable than an Impala, but the G35 may cost more to fix.

The major problem with the Impala, in my opinion, was that it is boring, and pretty common. My G35 is the first "fun" car I've ever owned, after years of driving a 88 Nova, then 95 Taurus. (before that, a 75 Nova).

The Impala will give you more interior room, a different ride feel. But if they are happier with it for the price, it is their money.

My dad likes his Buicks. I like the better handling of the G35 better, but I don't think I can convince him to spend the extra money on a G35 that is too small for his tastes.

Okay, speaking of reliability, has the G35 been out long enough that someone may have done a reliability study on it? Just curious, everyone I know who owns Infiniti's has had very good luck with their cars, and spoke very highly of that before I bought my G!

I don't know if it may help, but you could check into the reliability of the Skyline in Japan (and other countries, I think). That should give a sort of good picture of the reliability we can come to expect from the G.

Infiniti is rates #2 in long term dependability by JD Power, and since the powertrain is pretty much proven and bulletproof (VQ, Q45's trans, Z's manual), I would think the rest should hold up well.

Like you, everyone I've talked to who owns an Infiniti has very good things to say about the reliability and dependability, so I think we'll be OK. The 60k B2B and 70k powertrain helps as well! I know it's better than Acura and I think it may be better than Lexus, MB, and BMW....

Although I can guarantee that the G will be more reliable than anything GM will produce. Where I work, we (unforunately) are a GM fleet and those things (Maibu, GM trucks, Blazers, and Cavaliers) start falling apart after 30k or so.
Edited by mbryda on 02/08/04 07:49 AM.

Oh, okay, I was thinking the JD Power rating was something different, I did see that Infiniti was rated #2, I know someone who has had several Infiniti's, and the only reason their last purchase wasn't one was they wanted a pickup, LOL, so they bought a Nissan! I do find this car very solid initially compared to any Ford's I have owned, so much better fit of things, nice solid doors, etc.

Chalk and cheese - there is nothing to compare. One is a good ol American boat with floating ride and sh@#$y style both inside and out, the real staple of GM's demise!!! The other is an enthusiasts car - meant to be driven and enjoyed.

But let your folks buy what the need / want, a G is not for everyone and start saving for what you want.
