I would just pick up a set of bluebats. I had it on mine and had the "gtr cutouts" So it gave it the effect, but the actual part that lights up on the tails was not covered by the film. Looked great too
Here is a pic to show the gloss of it. Looked like paint
Here shows the actual cutouts on the tails and reverse lights

and the other is bluebat overlays. If you want a really blacked out look go with the spray of have them professional tinted at a tint shop. When you do this you will get pulled over. I live in cali and cops suck, but I have not got in any trouble with the bluebat due to the holes. Cops think its fine.
personally go with bluebat unless you want the cop hassle.
but just incase you do go for the spray over it and get a ticket here is a DIY for removing it.

^^^ what is "real paint"?
I've had bats (and I recommend them) - but I’ve also had 2 shades of smoked paint - have been pulled over (for speeding) and they didn’t say a word about the taillights... I've had cops behind me with both versions of smoke and they haven’t ticketed me (I'm in So Cal)...
When
I had overlays - the reason I did was so I could remove in case of ticket - got pulled over 5 or more times for speeding (none on my record btw) and they never mentioned the tint, so I felt comfortable about a more permanent solution... besides, with my setup overlays wouldn’t work anymore...

if they needed to be removed (for some strange reason) - it’s as easy as grinding out the molded area and removing as normal... but in nearly 5 years, the only time I've removed them was to paint. Why would they ever need to be removed?
