0-60; 1/4 which faster? G or TL

I am going to get a new car in the next 3 to 6 months. I am set on a 6 MT G35. However I have been puzzled by some magazine tests on 0-60 and 1/4 mile. First there was a test by Motor Trend on the 6 MT G like 5.9 on 0:60 and 14.2 on the 1/4. Then Car & Driver had a test with both the TL and the G where the TL had superior numbers, like 6.1 0-60 and 14.5 in the 1/4. The G did like 6.3 and 14.6 or 14.7. Latest issue of Road & Track had the TL do 6.3 in 0-60 and 14.8 in the 1/4. So now I am puzzled as to the true capability of the G. Has anyone have a race with a TL?
i am really curious. I guess more head to head comparisons are needed to sort their accelerations.

Re: 0-60; 1/4 which faster? G or TL

I was in the same situation about 2 months ago. I decided on the G35x about 2 weeks ago. As far as performance it's very similiar but I think TL has it by a nose. I'm not going on magazine times I'm solely basing this on seat of the pants feeling when I test drove both. If I was to base it on magazine times I think TL is faster (1/4 mile times). Since I got the G35 I've noticed two things I don't like, first is the G35 revs a lot higher than the TL (80mph @3000rpm) and the G35 is not good on gas. The gas mileage doesn't concern me but the high reving engine does. I'm not sure what the TL revs at at 80 mph but I would guess that the TL is a lot lower. I had a 2001 Acura CL Type-S that reved at about 2300rpm when cruising at 80mph.

Both cars are great cars, I chose the G35x because of the AWD. If I was to get a manual transmission I would also pick this car due to the RWD and LSD(2004), it's a lot more fun. Good luck selecting your car, either way you'll make a good choice.

I got the feeling the G35 was faster in the 1/4, and in all but that CD comparo, the G was faster than the TL.

Oh, not another TL Versus G battle. The TL is a nice car, so is the G, they're both nice, very nice cars. In fact they're so nice they have too be compared all the time. That's nice also.I just read about some 18 yr old kid getting a 911 Turbo in the coupe forum....that's even nicer...I like nice, it sounds nice, nice is a good word too use.

hey, just curious..
If TL was 0.1 second faster on 0-60 compare to G, is that mean you gonna forget about G??

No but I would like to get to the bottom here. There is a lot of inconsistency in the mags tests. By the way some 04 Maximas are getting down to 14.3 without mods; mainly 6 speed. But saw one auto reported 14.5 at the track. No mods on these.
My feeling is the G should get to the low 14's with no trouble,

Remember that next time you see a 0.1 second difference. Magazines test the cars by putting humans behind the wheel. R&T and C&D have different humans. Humans are funny in that no two are alike, or will manage to do a test the exact same way. They test at different locations, different altitudes/weather/road surfaces (even the same magazine with different tests throws these variables in).

Not to mention, these are all straight-line numbers you're talking about. Throw some curves into the mix and the RWD G35 is going to pull ahead. However, if you're just commuting to work every day, the TL has a nicer list of features and creature comforts.

ryo: Well said.

Agisa: Don't base your decision soley based on magazine times. Take it with a grain of salt. In general if all else being equal and a good driver behind the wheel a 6MT sedan will genearlly get low 14's in the 1320 and mid to high 5' in the 0-60. A 5AT will have slightly lower to times than the 6MT.

Don't forget guys the G35 in that test against the TL got the slowest time ever. It has done 14.2 at 100 mph in 2-3 tests. It also got 5.7-5.9 in them. C&D tested it way before and got that. The G35 is just plain faster.

Well put, ryoken!

Personally I look at the fun factors and freshness. The G is more fun to drive and will keep me happy and satisfy longer with the way its package itself. I hardly ever keep any car over the 3 years mark cause I get tired of them very easily. I got rid of my CL Type-S after 2 years of owning it cause its bored me very much after the first 6 month of ownership. But I keep my Prelude Type SH for 4 years and I still wanted back cause its fun but my G will fill in for it perfectly. The car I miss the most is my 6 years old 95' BMW V8 530i. Its still the ultimate driving machine IMO until I can explore and handle my G at the limit.

MPG comparison is not fair with the AWD, it is 600 lbs heavier.

The TL is a nice car. I went to go check one out. the interior is nice and has a few features that the G doesn't. There are a few reasons why I wouldn't buy a TL.

1.FWD people who live in the snow might like it but It never snows where I live. they plow like pigs in the corners and when you accelerate out, the inside wheel spins and the torque steer sucks

2. exterior styling. I am not a big fan of the warmed over 1998 mustang styling.

3. 270 Hp is too much to ask a FWD tranny to handle. It might be fine for others. But I know the way I like to drive and I know that tranny wouldn't last.

don't base your car decision off of pure magazine articles. Go out and get a feel for both the cars. Be happy with what you buy and don't pay attention to anybody else. your the one who pays the payments and as long as you like it, thats all that matters.

I agree on the torque steer, that's a lot of power going too the front wheels. A mate of mine had a 9-3 Viggen and that thing was so hard too drive and had major torque steer problems. In all honesty I prefer the TSX too the TL. I saw a beautiful red/willow one this weekend, respectable power and IMO a nicer design. The TL looks like it's been pieced together and it looks big.

To be a contender in the sports sedan arena, rwd is a must!
