Go '05. When I was thinking about buying a G in '04 I was only considering a coupe. I waited a little bit longer and when I saw the changes Infiniti made to the 6MT sedan, I had to have one. Nicer exterior changes, MUCH nicer interior, and a slight improvement power. What's not to like?

 

I would recommend at least the 04 because the 03s are somewhat limited to certain mods.

The 03/04 cars were rated at 260hp, but in reality, they put down closer to 275hp. The 03/04 cars are also fractionally lighter than the 05-06 so the performance difference is pretty minimal.

The 03/04 have by far the best looking front bumper available, but it's expensive.

The 05/06 cars have painted lower sills which looks a lot better than the 03/04 black plastic sills.

The 05/06 cars have better looking interiors and slightly different seats, though I think the 05/06 seats aren't as supportive as the 03/04 seats.

Steer clear of the 05/06 6MT cars. The 298hp Rev-Up engine is a POS.

 

Most of the benefits of the newer cars, like mp3 support, isn't worth it for me to upgrade yet from my paid for 04.

I just thought that, all else being equal, an 05 with considerably fewer miles is worth the extra $3000. Not a repaired vehicle, or a turned in lemon, etc. Or a color you can't live with.

 

I have never heard this before is this commonly known?

Also keep in mind that the 260hp rating was based off of the 1st generation '03 motor (crank driven fan). Sometime after that they went to an electric fan (freed up some hp) and I was told they did some ECU changes. I have an 04.5 6MT and it was a dead heat between my buddies '05 6MT, both equipped exactly the same.

The original stock clutches in the '03 & '04 were stiffer than the '05 & '06 models. Customer complained about the pedal effort so it was revised for '05.
The 6MT tranny is not as notchy on the '05 & '06 either. I just replaced the clutch in my car (new tranny) and now the pedal is not as stiff as the original one was (but the transmission is awsome now).

I kinda like the black stripe on my '04. I'm surprised I've been able to keep it black. Most other ones I see have turned an ugly faded (gray) color.

What DaveB means by steering clear of the 05/06 6MT sedan is the oil consumption problem. You can find all the info related to the problem here.

 

I just picked up an '04. Test drove an '05 and a '04 back to back and I'd recommend you try the same thing. The '04 just felt more involved with the better feeling shifter (yes, it's notchy, but it just feels better to use that way) and (buttdyno) felt torquier. Overall, it just felt like a more sporty car. The '05 has a better interior (center console, clock, gauges, power tilt/telescope wheel). Seats seemed the same to me, so it came down to that the '04 just felt sportier. Going to have to get the '05 taillights though.

 

Your opinion must be based on a short commute...No way I'd drive any car that's a manual and make my daily commute...

 

What is the standard manufacturer warranty? 3yr/30k? 5yr/50k?

 

I actually do have a pretty short commute (now), but the last 7 cars i have owned have been manual, and even if i commuted a solid 2 hours each way through stop and go traffic, id still rock my 6MT.

Very common. Do some research on this site and my350Z.com and take note of just how many people have had their 05/06 Rev-Up motors replaced because of excessive oil consumption. It is definitely a huge problem and seems to afflict about 1 in 3 Rev-Ups. Some guys are on thier 3rd motors now.

As for the 6MT, I suggest you drive one and then drive the 5AT. The 5AT in these cars is very responsive and gives up hardly anything to the 6MT. I've owned lots of manual cars and I just couldn't handle the way the 6MT is in these cars. It vibrates in your hand like mad and vibrations can be felt through the pedals. All this annoyed me after 6 years of ownership with my 96 Maxima 5MT and I wasn't willing to deal with it on the G. After driving the auto, I was amazed at how quick it was. Around town, it feels a bit quicker than the 6MT.

Also, the 6MT trannies have their fair share of issues too. Lots of people have had their's replaced due to bad syncros.
