Re: Went to the track last night.

Guys what launch rpm do you recommend? Who was racing in NJ that was teaching school out there doing the 2000-2300 rmp lauches and putting up better times by .2-.4? Searching for the thread now...

Re: Went to the track last night.

your launch rpms depend mostly on your tires. I assume you guys are all talking about automatic tranny's. In that case, about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle (depending on traction conditions) applied in a brake flashing (for lack of better adjectives) is the best way to launch this beast until you get a T/C upgrade.

Brake Flashing-applying throttle with brake applied like engine braking.but youdon't hold the rpms. Brake on, tap the gas and let go so that rpms go to around 1500 or somewhere just barely above idle. still holding brake pedal. then tap the gas again about 1/2 throttle and let off the brake JUST after rpms start to rise. this has been my best way to launch stock automatics (lots of practice on loaners ). This lets you take advantage of the peak weight transfer that happens right after you apply throttle. Done right you can snap your neck back and is less likely to spin tires than if you brake torque.

once you are modded some, especially tires, torque braking (standing on both gas and brake, then letting brake go at last yellow light) is the way to go. Stock you will spin like crazy

The E.T. starts when you move. In bracket racing Reaction time is important but still won't affect your E.T.

Now a manual launch can be done at around 4000 rpms or even higher if you correctly feather the throttle. There is no answer here other than to practice like a ****. took me 20,000 miles and a set of tires before I learned the fine point between bogging and spinning thru first gear in the G.

Re: Went to the track last night.

another trick to a better E.T. (doesn't help much on bracket racing) is "shallow staging". This where you stage right after the second light lights, no more than inches past it. This gives you about a foot of room to start moving before you trip the second light and begin the E.T. clock. You can start rolling and get the tires moving so you will have better traction when you actually get on the throttle. If you were already at the edge of the staging zone, you will start your et as you are rolling before you get on the gas too much.

this is kinda like cheating but is legal.

My motto: "If you aren't cheating, you aren't trying. If you get caught, you ain't trying hard enough."

nice posts...anyone got a diagram of the staging and light areas for most tracks? I guess google for lunch it is!

also when brake flashing - great idea by the way - are full throttle immed after the release of the brake?

Re: Went to the track last night.

i have a 6MT and i used 3k drop launch. but i didnt feather the throttle enough and roasted my tires. I cant imagine doing over 3500 launch. Does it cause premature clutch wear?

Re: Went to the track last night.

Yes, DRAGRACING will cause premature EVERYTHING wear. But if done in moderation, you won't notice the difference. As far as feathering the clutch at 3-4k rpm, that is one of the single worst things you can do to a clutch, but it gets the best launch.

brake flashing....I have never got full hookup at full throttle on the launch. Again it depends on the traction conditions.......i.e. tires, track surface prep, temperature (hot is better for launch but not for top end), etc. You have to go by feel, until you can do that you won't have your best launch.
