Went to the track last night.

I had a lot of fun at Indianapolis Raceway Park opening night. (last night) it was packed to the brim. I waited in line for my first pull for over 1 1/2 hours. This was my first time to the track, i previously owned an SUV and had no reason to go. The track conditions were, outside temp 44 with 10 mph winds. It was windy on the track and effected the times for sure. Because of cold condiitions i dropped my tire pressure to 22lbs instead of what the factory puts in, 36lbs!!!! The first pull i had i was extremely nervous. My legs wouldn't stop shaking. You dont get nervous on the street whenever having some fun, but there's something about the track that gives ya jitters. Anywayz my first pull i didnt have my car all the way in 1st it was only half way in. So i totally screwed the launch and ran a terrible 17.842 this was embarassing but i was expecting a bad run because it was my first. My second however was alot better because i wasn't nervous at all. I raced a little honda accord rice burner which the G annhilated. i had a little too much tirespin @ launch but i pulled a 14.490 which i was pleased with for my 2nd run. My last run was against a nice eclipse that looked pretty stock, but had upgraded turbo systems in it. We had a hell of a run. we both had decent launches but had too much tirespin again. It was the closest race of the night. My G ran a 14.530, the Eclipse ran a 14.685. I barely pulled it out. but hey winning is winning. Hopefully track conditions will be better next time. I'd like to run a 14 flat. i believe this car is capable of it with the right driver. What times have you ran @ the track?

Re: Went to the track last night.

on a cold day (<50 degrees) you should see a 14 flat. 13.9 is probably just outta reach. This is my experience from a 2003 model. I don't know how the 2004's LSD will help the launch.

Traction on the right rear tire is the killer for me (no LSD). i normally run my right rear tire about 1-2 lbs less than my left rear tire to reduce the chance of wheelspin.

Throw on some sticky tires (F1 GS-D3's, S-03's, or such) and you should be able to bring the launch down to a 2.0 second sixty foot time. That should be good for 13.8 or so.

firm up your suspension in addition to all the above stuff and you can bring the 60' time down another tenth. This car has alot of lost momentum on launch due to a luxury suspension (even the sport model)

I ran a 14.4 @ 99 with a 2.2 60' when my car was stock. This was at 1200 ft altitude. So you should be able to bring it down at least a couple tenths just by pracice

Congratulations guys and you are doing it safely on a track and not at risk to others on the road. Wished all the other racers out there would take the same initiative.

Re: Went to the track last night.

I ran 14.3 at 97.5 mph bone stock. 1800 miles. I wonder why I only got that out of the car. I didn't change any tire pressure. I was hoping for 99~.

Turq, can you list your full time slip? This way we can try to determine where improvements can be made. I think you did well for the first time out, congrats!

Re: Went to the track last night.

I can tell you my reaction time is very bad, that's my main reason for a slow time but here's the full slip.

What RPM do you usually launch @?

1st run

R/T .836
60' 2.304
330 6.251
1/8 9.467
mph 77.37
1000 12.213
1/4 14.530
mph 96.04

2nd Run
R/T .892
60' 2.227
330 6.194
1/8 9.413
mph 77.22
1000 12.166
1/4 14.490
mph 95.74

I'm gonna go back in a couple weeks to see what she'll run. by then i should have my ECU too hopefully.

I don't think reaction time is a factor against your 1/4 mile time... spinning your tires is another story

Re: Went to the track last night.

Yeah, reaction time only matters when your bracket racing against someone else. If your only concerned with what you get for your ET you can have a 10 second RT. Doesn't matter. The clock doesn't start for your ET till you pass the first line.

Re: Went to the track last night.

i'm 80% positive the clock starts when the light turns green. I dont think when you start to move is when the clock starts. But i could be wrong.

The standard christmas tree (lights) are timed at .5 seconds apart, and your reaction time depends on how long you leave after the green light (.500 is a perfect time).

But your quarter mile time is fully independent of the lights. You can technically leave anytime after you are staged and still get your 1/4 time. This is fine for testing and tuning, but for competition, reaction time plays a big role in determining the winner.

On another note, your trap speeds (95-96mph) seem a little slow for the 60' times and 1/4 times. You should try experimenting with your shift points to bring that up.

Re: Went to the track last night.

What RPM do you usually launch @? I launched @ 3500 RPM and really put down some rubber. As far as my trap speed, I think my speed was a little slow because i kinda messed up the shift from 3rd to 4th on both runs. what have been your best times and trap speed? any other suggestions on where i can improve? I really really want to get a 14 flat or 13.9. i know the car can do it i just need to know where my weaknesses are.

Re: Went to the track last night.

FYI, Reaction has nothing to do with your slow time.

=================================

You are. You can stand in your starting position for as long as you wish, the clock does NOT start until you untrip the second staging light, i.e. when your car begins to move.

Re: Went to the track last night.

Gurgen is right. In fact, the start time doesn't begin until your front wheels move enough to no longer break the staging light.

Re: Went to the track last night.

Yep. That's what I meant my "untrip". I know that's not the best way to put it - but I just sort of type and not think when it's late.

Kind of OT: but hey Steve, anything new with your car?
