Transmission replacement

I just got some bad news from my Infiniti dealer. I need a new auto transmission for my 2003.5 g35. It has 117K kms or about about 73K miles which is not alot for a 5 year old car. Cost is $5200. Powertrain warranty expired as it was only good up to 110K Kms. This is the first time I have had a transmission fail on any vehicle. Any suggestions about dealing with Infiniti or dealership and going forward with the car. Thinking about selling or trading.

Loosing confidence in Infiniti product!!!!!!!!

Wow that SUCKS.. I don't know what to say. Were you beating the car down. Bunch of burnouts etc...
I haven't actually heard of an auto tranny failing. They are supposed to be pretty bulletproof.

Good luck
also is you sell or trade your going to eat that 5200 anyway. sorry

Get a tranny from a junkyard or ebay, shouldn't cost more than $1000.

What happened? I had an issue with mine where I lost some tranny oil from the oil cooler hoses, and after a short while the AT check and Service engine soon lights came one. Infiiniti checked the code and said that it needs to be replaced without actually topping it off with oil (like I asked them to). I went to a local tranny shop, and they put in some Jmatic and all the lights disappeared. They inspected it and said my transmission is fine. It's been 5 months now since then and trust me - if there was something wrong with the tranny, it would have shown by now. These are very good transmissions.
I was about to go the junk-yard route too. I found some with 35k miles for $800 in my area with 3 month warranty. Good luck

a brand new in box MT transmission is not very much... You can score one for under $2000 plus shipping brand new from popular online re-sellers...

You can do the swap your self or with some buddies.

If you dont, labor should be $500 at MOST.

oh wait... AUTO transmission? They sure its not just programming that needs to be done?

You can find auto trans by the dozens in the unk yards...

$3500 for a NEW IN BOX Auto Trans from popular online resellers...

When was the last time you got your tranny fluid drained/flushed? Even lack of simple tranny maintenance can cause a transmission from any car to become inoperative, much just like the engine oil.

Nothing lasts forever and the fact that it's used means the previous owner could have abused it. If it were me, I'd take my car to a quality independent import shop and have them source you a used 5AT. You should be able to get away with a used auto for about $1K and have it installed for $400-600.

You're not the only one. 112,000km. My reverse wont' engage. Happened months after I replaced the tranny fluid with jmatic at the infiniti dealership.

infiniti sucks when it comes to reliability. my stereo, passenger window and tranny are messed...

followup

I have had the car for 2 years and I don't drive it hard. 15-20K kms per year and I may have squealed the tires a half dozen times since I got it.

I stopped into the dealership yesterday and saw the unit. Three of the clutch plates and gears were scored and the fluid was black.

They advised it was toast and even I know fluid was not the proper color. I know the service technician and he is not BSing me. The sympton was that the car would slide in and out of gear during moderate acceleration on a slight incline at 40 to 70 KMS/hour. The tach needle would fly around. The dealership advises that infiniti will likely do something for me. I will let you all know.

A fully rebuilt one goes for $1500.00. Installation at a dealer should only be $500.00 to 600.00.
