Looking to Buy a Used G35 Sedan, Pre Purchase Questions
So… I have decided to sell my Legacy GT Limited and upgrade to a G35. I am infatuated by the car and must have one!
It looks like this a great owner’s community and full of information, that I hope you will summarize for me in this thread! Please don’t jump me for not searching first, make an exception for me and just lay everything on the line
I will probably be purchasing a 03-04 between 60-80k miles….
Some general questions I have
Real World MPG?
Longevity?
Reliability?
Major Trouble spots?
Things to look out for?
Any major tranny/engine issues?
Consumer reports specifically knocks the G35 in the brakes and body hardware department, but all other mechanical departments receive and above or much better then average rating.
Thanks for your time in advance, and I hope to become a real member with a real G35 very soon!
Michael

Real World MPG? Probably 17-19mpg around town. They arent known for MPGs
Longevity? Is this the same as reliability?
Reliability? Some cars have over 200k miles (the 03-04s) and they are running strong. People say these things will go awhile.
Major Trouble spots? Tacky interior in 03-04.
Things to look out for? Breaks
Any major tranny/engine issues? Only on the 6mts
If you can, find a 05-06 G sedan. They really fixed them up from the 03-04s.

I have an 03 6mt, love the car. I love the interior too. I have 116000 miles on mine so far. The leather still looks great, its been VERY reliable. My biggest grip is the front drivers seat bracket. For some reason it keeps failing. Im on my 3rd one now and its on its way out. Breaks are great (aftermarket pads and rotors). Still on the stock clutch, and going strong. Honestly the only things I have had to do are change the oil, brakes, tires, and trans/grear oil. Thats it. Everything else on the car is original. Runs great. I also average about 410 miles per tank. I drive my car softly most of the time. (shift at 2K). Tranny and motor are great. Hope this helps.

57000 miles on my '03.5. I don't put a lot of miles as I have my other car (the Corolla) as my daily beater. The G35 has been pretty reliable but there are a few relatively known issues you should keep in mind when deciding on your purchase:
1) The compression rods on most if not all of the sedans can cause a clunking noise to occur up front when going over small or big dips on the road. The dealer can replace them under the basic warranty coverage (4 yr/60K miles), but if you're out of warranty you'll most likely have to live with it like most of us.
2) Rattle noises may most likely occur in the cabin, especially found near the rear passenger window. There are some minor DIY fixes for them. DaveB has a well-thought out thread detailing these fixes. Here's the link for more info: https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sedan-v35-2003-06/79805-diy-2003-2004-g35-sedan-rattle-exorcism.html
3) Stock CD changer may have a load error, which means you can't eject or insert a CD. It has to do with an internal short in the circuit board of the CD changer, and a lot of us have had that problem. Luckily I got mine replaced under warranty, and haven't had any problems since then. Be sure not to play CD-Rs in the CD changer.
4) Front brakes. On 9 out of 10 G35's, you'll see a huge dusting problem with the front brakes, which means that the brake life gets severely reduced. Infiniti is aware of this problem and will replace the brakes at 30K miles or 2 years from the date of purchase. Some of us have opted to replace the stock pads/rotors with aftermarket ones which achieve equal or better braking performance. There are many choices out there like Hawk, Brembo, Wilwood, etc., and some of them may even be priced about the same as the stocks or cheaper.
That's all I can think of for now. There are no known engine oil consumption or transmission problems with the '03-'04 G35. Other than the relatively low MPG figure, you'll find that the G35 is one of the most sought-after luxury sport sedans in its class. Good luck with your research
