Motor Trend Comparison

I just picked up the May issue of Motor Trend, and in it is a comparison of near luxury sport sedans. In the article, MT compares the G35 sedan, Acura TL, Saab 9 3 Aero, and the Cadillac CTS. All are auto trannies. The result:

1. G35
2 CTS
3. TL
4. 9 3 Aero

The editors of MT are either very smart, or they feel a need to justify their selection of the G35 as their Car of the Year 2 years ago. Personally, I think they're smart!

Good results. Funny they didn't include a Bimmer Sedan.

Re: Motor Trend Comparison

no BMW???? i guess they figure the 325 is no match for those 250+ hp V6.

i wonder why they didn't review the MT versions?
what about 0-60 numbers? especially the TL.

Re: Motor Trend Comparison

I think that the idea of the article was to show which sedan was the top competitor for the 3 series BMW.

Here are the numbers:

0-60

Infiniti 6.2
Acura 6.3
Cadillac 6.6
Saab 6.9

0-100

Acura 17.3
Infiniti 17.9
Cadillac 19.4
Saab 20.5

1/4 Mile

Infiniti 14.68 @ 94.02
Acura 14.78 @ 94.40
Caddilac 14.99 @ 91.95
Saab 15.09 @ 90.55

60-0 Braking

Infiniti 111 ft.
Saab 121 ft.
Cadillac 124 ft.
Acura 128 ft.

Slalom course

Infiniti 65.2 mph
Acura 64.1 mph
Cadillac 63.7 mph
Saab 62.4 mph

Skid pad

Infiniti .87 g
Saab .85 g
Acura .80 g
Cadillac .80 g

That just means that the TL was traction limited; once at speed it ran the G35 down. The quarter mile trap speed shows the TL ahead by about .4mph at the end of the 1/4 mile. Watch out for them on the highway!

Re: Motor Trend Comparison

Looks like the 0-100 mph time and the quarter mile time don't come from the same run.

Although I can't prove that MT did get the times from the same run, you can't deduce that they didn't either.

They could have just as easily kept the timer going until each car hit 100mph after taking the 1/4 time.

Or maybe I'm not understanding your post?

Re: Motor Trend Comparison

I'm just saying it looks kinda odd unless the Acura is just so much powerful than the Infiniti or the Infiniti shifts into another gear.

First of all, the Infiniti wins the quarter mile run by .1 secs. So by 14.78 secs, the Infiniti should be going faster than 94.02 mph. It may even be going 94.40 mph ( same as the Acura).

Now, can the acura really out accelerate the Infiniti from 94.4 mph to 100 mph by .6 secs ? That is my question.

Additionally, similar runs by MT in other comparisons suggest that I may be right.

August 2002 MT
Stats for the G35 Sedan 5AT
0-60 6.21
Quarter Mile 14.61@95.67 mph
0-100 16.62
The data set above seems to make more sense than the recent comparison.

Re: Motor Trend Comparison

Maybe they did the 4-5 shift in the G35 at 97mph. That'll lose a 1/2 second.

Re: Motor Trend Comparison

Oh, these are automatics, so it would be the 3-4 shift. In 3rd the auto goes 104mph at redline (6600) so its possible it would shift just below 100. But then again autos powershift so it shouldn't really slow it that much.
