I live in Miami, FL and I drive a 04' 5AT Sedan... my gas mileage is HORRENDOUS..(I am in breakin right now with about 300 miles on odo) what tips do you guys recommend since I literally am only driving when going to work about 15-20mins tops with full traffic?

Not much you can do about that except find a longer way to work and use a turnpike for a while where mileage will improve with steady speed.

Your mileage will improve a great deal as you put some miles on it.

I'm sure hoping so.. and I can't take the turnpike to get to work.. that would be just silly (I literally live off the same road from work just about 40 blocks east.) So mileage will get better with time.. here's hoping.. what type of gas are you guys using? I've been using Mobil 93 Octane Premium gas....

I use 93 wherever I can find it. Unlike aviation fuel, there are no real standards for auto fuel so you gamble no matter where you buy it. Depending on where you are in the country and what season it is will determine what you're getting to some degree. I've heard that Texaco and Shell have their own standards but other than the octane rating auto fuel varies a great deal. I'm not in Cali though so I can't speak to their fuel, but I know it's different. Unless you're using forced induction or other heavy mods, don't worry about it, the 93 is more than sufficient to prevent detonation and improve your gas mileage.

My last car (an Audi A4 with Wett chip) got about 20 mpg until I put a couple thousand miles on her, and finally ended up getting about 25 mpg on average with a stick and lead foot.

There are many myths surrounding fuel and what you should buy and why. To learn a great deal about auto fuel try http://www.piperowner.org and do your search there using a keyword like "autogas STC". No one knows more than the general aviation plane owners. Their lives depend on it.

What's your mileage? I am driving 20mi to work mostly highway not much traffic and I get 18mpg... my old car was a Dodge Intrepid (much bigger car) I drove the same speeds and same route and was getting over 23mpg

The mileage sucks and I haven't found that it got any better with age. But the car is fast that's what I wanted so I'll live with the mileage.

A 3 mile trip is just too short to ever expect good mileage. Just go for a long trip on the weekends to average it out.

Ive got 1700 miles on my '04 Auto sedan, and im getting about 15 MPH (80% city driving). I did just take a 180 mile trip and got about 18 miles, but that was averaging 85 MPH.

Good god, man. If you want better gas mileage buy a Prius.

I do too get 12 to 15 mpg to go to work. I'm only 2 to 3 miles away, and the car doesn't have a chance to warm up to operating temp before I get there already. My suggestion is that always turns off your AC before you shut off the car. This improves a little for me.

Can't think of a mpg solution. I did not see an improvement in mpg as the car got older. I also do not see an improvement with 91 octane. Not to be a wise crack or anything, but have you considered running or biking to work? Assuming the road conditions allow you to do this, you could get to work without using gas, get in better shape, and reduce the frequency of going to the gas station. Just a thought, otherwise, I don't see any solution to increase you mileage...Good luck!

Re: Short travel to work.. 5AT..best mileage ideas?

Running/cycling is not an option.. I'll live with the gas mileage.. but the sick thing is this mileage isn't like I'm pushing the car or anything.. this is with under 3k rpm etc, so I don't even want to imagine once I start hittin the gas a lil

I shift between 5 and 7k rpm all the time...everytime unless I am up against some granny and I cant switch lanes...get 17.5 mpg hard city Houston driving.
