Shift Indicator/Shift Mechanism/Console
Hey Guys,
During the process of installing an XM unit for my 06 G35 Sedan (AT 2WD), one of the guys at Best Buy messed something up on my shifter.
I apologize for not using proper terminology, but basically here's a pic (borrowed from another post) to help:

The top portion (the shift indicator) is now separating from the overall console below it (the part that houses the hazard switch and ash tray).
Also, after removing the shift ****, then pulling out the assembly (like the one in the pic above), I could hear a plastic piece rattling around and the shift indicator practically slops around on top of the main piece (nearly separating completely).
Everything is functional, but the orange indicator (the bright orange piece that visually shows you what gear your in at the shifter) is torn, etc.
What do you guys recommend? The top (shift indicator, #4 in the diagram below) and then a piece (#5 in the diagram below) sandwich around the main console portion.

I think I need both #4 and #5 (from diagram above). I guess I could order the entire assy (#3) but I think that runs around $400 and I really don't need the entire thing (I want it fixed right, but I also want to be fair to Best Buy as well. The XM installation works fine and they only charged me $45 for labor). It looks like they were trying to pry off #4 above, instead of removing the entire assy as a unit.
Has anyone had to replace this piece (or these pieces) before? Even though it's an '06, there's less than 12K miles on the car and I'd really like to get things back together properly.
Any assistance is appreciated......
By the way, here's a pic of the vehicle (pretty plain, but a much needed upgrade over the 94 4cyl Camry I WAS driving!)

Thanks,
Patric

Take the car to the dealer and said it broke. They may replace it under warranty if they dont noticed you had best buy install some stuff.
My light in the shifter went out, they told me they had to replace the whole unit, couldnt replace just the bulb. I got a whole new unit, including ***, boot, trim piece........all for one bad bulb

Do anyone know if you have to remove the clock (or the panel/molding above it) to remove the factory stereo? The reason I ask is (referencing the same install by Best Buy above), I just noticed that the molding that is IN the dash, just above the clock, is loose and won't snap down. I can push it down, but it rises back up slowly (and doesn't look like it did originally)

Could be my imagination (especially if this piece doesn't have to be removed to gain access to the radio, etc).
Should that molding be snapped down tight or have some play in it?
Thanks

It's not your imagination. They did have to pull it off to get to your radio. Don't worry it is normal for installers to not get it in correctly (a lot of infiniti installers can't even do it correctly)
To fix it, this is what you'll have to do.
Pull it off.
It comes off by pulling towards you.
Now you have to pull off the lower black piece (what it snaps into, below the clock)
You will need to get something to go under it, like a plastic putty knife, or screwdriver, or credit card. Whatever you feel comfortable using. Tip, it is easier if you push down on the area closest to the clock. This will tilt it a little to make it easier to get under.
Once you have the two parts off. Connect them together. (as if it was installed)
The only way to get it in correctly is to insert the two while they are still connected. Take your time and be patient. The reward is worth it.
Good luck
P.S. I found the instructions in an Infiniti FSM, yet Infiniti dealerships can't even do it right

Turns out the small tip on the molding (that sits above the clock) was sheered off, so I'm having to get creative to put that back together.
I'll probably just tack-glue the tip to the bottom portion (that snaps in under the clock) then reinstall the entire assy. Doing it this way means that I can still pull it out later (but it will take a bit more effort to snap the glue joint I'm creating). Fun fun fun! :-)
Again, thanks for the info!

I agree, if Best Buy screwed this all up let them deal with how to fix it, or at least make a claim for damages so your costs are covered.

I talked with the local store manager (a guy I've known for years) and he is very willing and happy to get it taken care of. Since there's not a local Infiniti dealership, I told him I had order the parts (around $80 total instead of nearly $250 from the dealer) and he said they would just reimburse me for those. (I think I'd rather install them myself). The kid that did the install did a great job (as far as that part of the job was concerned) and only charged me about $60 total, so I hate to give the impression that I'm "raking them over the coals"... As long as the parts I ordered get me back to where I was (even if I install them), I'm happy.
