Limp Mode Nightmare
Hi All...I am hoping for some help...and quick. My Car has run flawlessly for the 10 months I have had it. It's an 03.5 G35 5AT Sedan...and the only two things I have done to it ar the Grounding Kit and a FrankenCar CAI...both these mods were done last summer.
Tonight, while in NH during a downpour (not the first time) I came to a toll both, paid my toll, and got on it to get back up to speed...except that the car started farting and hiccupping until I had to throw the hazzards on and pull to the right. I thought it was dead...but if I touched the gas with the slightest of pressure I could get the car up to 64 mph...then it would feel like I was running over rail road ties if it hit 65 mph...and if I depressed the gas at all passed the smidgen I was using to maintain 60...it would bog down to like 10 mph....I had to limp home...in a down pour...on a major highway for 27 miles...
Can anyone please fill me in as to wtf this is? I am getting nothing doing a search and I want to have my ducks in a row when I call the service dept. tomorrow morning.
Thanks so much...in advance. Oh, btw, I threw the car in neutral twice and turned it back on and it did nothing to change the condition...and not one idiot light or warning display ever appeared in the dash or on the NAV...very, very odd...

Re: Limp Mode Nightmare
With no warning lights I would have to say its something electrical. Maybe something got wet in the down pour or could it be from humidity. It sounds odd how with very little throttle the car would run, but too much load and it would hesitate. Maybe ignition?

When I read this thread title, I instantly thought of Viagra. Odd.
Do you have any mods that might cause a problem? ie. a soaked intake, etc. My naive self would run an ECU reset and see what pops up.... then it's dealership-bound.

Re: Limp Mode Nightmare
Does it smell like fuel when you look under the hood after starting the car? Mine did almost the same thing to me. I stopped on the side of the road after about 3 miles and called roadside assistance. Mine would run like crap, hickup and sputter and would almost die when it was idling so I had to keep the throttle down at least a bit during stops. Infiniti replaced the fuel pump, said it had gone bad and was dumping excess fuel into the engine. Does it act like it's flooded after you turn it off and then back on again. Could be your problem but whatever it is, I'd take off the intake and put on the stocker and call Infiniti.

Re: Limp Mode Nightmare
So you have a FrankenCar intake? Those guys would never
respond to my emails. How do you like it? I've not heard of
one instance of anyone using the FrankenCar intake on the
G35. I was considering one for the wife's 2000 Maxima, but
since they would not even acknowledge their existence
to me, I have not considered them.

Re: Limp Mode Nightmare
Guys, my only mods are a CAI and the grounding kit...they have been on for almost a year now with zero issues and I have driven through many a downpour...
Is their any kind of official limp mode this car goes into when a specific set of things happens internally or something.
Fuel Pumps are either on or off from my experience...and the car was getting plenty of fuel until the computer seemed to kick in and kill it all.
Frankencar sucks to deal with. They have 3 people, one person does not even work there, one kid trys to help, but he's administrative and has his customer service hands tied, and the one who actually shows his face and gets the stuff done is the worst business person on the face of the planet. Ironically, their CAIs sound awesome...my wife's 02 Maxima SE runs 14.5 (an automatic that beats 99% of G35 Autos down the 1/4 mi) with just that and it sounds great. They made a protype 350Z tube and we fit it up to my G35 and then the nightmares started...they never finished the job and started production...they'll be out of business soon enough from one thing or another unless they revamp their entire tune of how to do business.

I was tugging on the rope to get a FrankenCar intake for the
2000 Maxima. But since i can't even verify these guys are still
in business, I won't send money or place an order from them.
They must be the worst business people in the world.
So why should I think they make a good product?
Go figure....I emailed them many times, never got a reply.
No customer service...No business!
Your problem sound like an electrical or computer related.
You need to see the dealer.

Thanks Cato...I will set up an appt then.

Re: Limp Mode Nightmare
If you reread my last post I had mentioned that everything concerning the Airfilter to the Throttle body was a brick sh*t house...I am not saying that rudely...just saying it. :-)
I am baffled...and the Infiniti dealer said he never heard of such a thing (shocker)...but to bring it in next week...It's crap like this that make me lose confidence in a vehicle really fast.

Sorry. I read that. Just wasn't sure if it was a good or bad thing in this context.
Best of luck finding the cause. Hopefully the dealer won't blame your mods if they can't find anything else. Maybe it threw a code they can read on Consult II.

Re: Limp Mode Nightmare
Bosssho,
I had a Stillen intake on my G and drove it for about 6k miles and started having limp mode problems too (believe it or not)!!! It happened sporratically. I would step on the gas and the car would not run past 2400 RPM!!! I would turn the car off for 10 seconds, restart it, and it would run fine again for a bit but then start again. Sometimes on my way to work I would have to restart the engine 3-4 times and it's only a 6mi ride!!! I couldn't figure out why it was doing it. I got pissed and removed the Stillen intake and all's been fine ever since. As to a cause, here are my observations. My AC pulley was out of alignment. It chewed up my belt pretty bad and the belt actaully fractured in the parking lot at work one night as I started my car to go home. Roadside assistance towed me to the dealer and they realigned the AC compressor and replaced both engine belts. The belt getting chewed up left a black dust all throughout my engine compartment though and that's when it seemed like the limp mode stuff started. My thought is that the K&N on the Stillen was coated with this black belt dust and every time I'd get on the car a bit, the dust from the K&N would pass over the MAF sending it into "shock" thinking the engine isn't getting air! That caused the limp mode and a restart reset the MAF and at idle and low RPM's, no dust would pass over it. To confirm my theory, I will have to clean or get a new K&N and reinstall it with the Stillen and see what happens. I'm surprised that with the stock box and the stock sized K&N, I haven't had an issue with it at all - no more limp mode. So I haven't taken my G to the dealer to solve this because it's no longer an issue. If I clean or get a new K&N and reinstall the Stillen and it happens again, the only thing I can think of that would cause limp mode is that the lower air pressure in the intake causes the MAF to go wacko and send false ATF (air to fuel) rations to the ECU making the ECU think the car is starving for air (as if it was under water). If a new or cleaned K&N on the Stillen works fine, then I know it was the belt dust. I'm going to wait until later this summer to try this but I'll post my findings once I try it!
I hope your situation with the frankencar intake improves and this doesn't happen any more. I know what a biotch it is to deal with limp mode BS!

Re: Limp Mode Nightmare
The funny thing with my situtation is that I have had the CAI on for almost a year now...and I have not ever had one single issue with it...and I have driven through many a crazy rain storm as well...but on this particular night, it was crazy raining out and maybe something got into the MAF waterwise and put it into limp mode...it ran 14.2 @ 96 mph a week later...and it's an auto...so I think, overall, it's running A+...hopefully I never have to go through that BS again.
Let me know what you find out after you get the new Filter and reinstall the CAI, take it easy.
