new DROP in K&N

do the drop in K&N filters need oil as well? when i purchased one the other day, there was no oil to put on filter and Autozone dude said none was needed. does the oil have to be added once it has been hosed off when dirty?

SORRY for the NOOB question but it has been quite a while since I've used an after market filter in a car.

if its new youre not going to need to oil it..
when it comes time, purchase a "recharger kit" which comes with spray cleaner and oil. instructions are in the box.

Yep, you don't have to oil it out of the box. I had a K&N filter at one point but I went away from it because it loves to build up dirt more than the traditional paper filter. The oil on the filter contributes to the build up. The only benefit I see in the K&N is that they can be re-used. When it comes time to "recharge" it, be careful with the application of the oil. Make sure you don't over oil it and let it dry properly. The oil can make its way to the MAF sensor and you'll get a CEL. Just letting you know from my experience.

If you stick with K&N, the best thing is to buy two. Oil the one you cleaned and let it sit while you use the one you oiled last time. I had K&N, but changed to Amsoil Nano filter because of the possibility of the K&N oil damaging the MAF.

You can do that but you could also buy a regular air filter as a back up. Last time I checked, K&N filters were about $50 and stock filters are about $10.

Just be very careful when re-oiling the K&N and you'll be fine. Newbies tend to think if a little is good, a lot must be better!

Use as little oil as possible and majke sure you blot away the excess and let it sit for an hour or so to let it dry further.

I didn't realize you were the one buying the filter. I was making a suggestion to the OP not you. I think he is smart enough to figure out he can buy a stock filter if he doesn't want two K&N filters.

OKAY. GOTCHA. I didn't know you were the only one who could make suggestions. I was suggesting another alternative to spending more money.

thanks for the help guys. im not sure what i will do once the filter needs to be cleaned since its not the EASIEST thing to change because of the tight fit. the ONLY advantage to a CAI is the fact that the filter is right in front of you to remove/clean so that was a thought at one time. i will looking into the Amsoil one here in a bit for comparisons.....

when you opened the K&N filter, did you not see the writing all over the plastic packet that says "pre-oiled and ready to install"?

When you clean them you have to re-oil them...
