Repair/renovation begins...

Well a little while ago a drunk driver hit and ran my car on the street, and I've been waiting to get started on fixing it. The back bumper cover was absolutely crushed on one side, and the bumper supports were visibly bent at least a little. Being under 25 and having a car totaled recently, I couldn't afford to go through insurance, so started saving up to get it fixed as well as possible.

I got pretty lucky, as a member on here was selling parts from his 05 (mine's an 04) DGG sedan, so I picked up a rear bumper cover, splash guards, a stock spoiler, and body painted side skirts. Now the fun begins...

I took the bumper cover off today, and the body was a little worse than I imagined. There's some visible rust under one of the holes from the damage, so the first thing will be treating/primering that to keep it from spreading. Next, I'll need to hammer out/straighten the bent part of the rear quarter under the bumper. I started this tonight, and it's going a lot easier than I thought (with the help of many wrenches, hammers, a crowbar, and many combinations of angles). I should have it banged out straight tomorrow, before the bumper gets here.

I've attached some pics of the beginning of the process. Sorry about the quality, all I have is a ****ty camera phone. Moral of the story is don't street park in the city I guess...

good luck with the fix, oh and on the new bumper that you bought you will have one little extra hole because its an 05 and they have a button to open the trunk from outside, and 03-04's dont have it, just wanted to let you know in case you didnt know yet,

kudos for doing this on your own! I think you'll enjoy the upgrades and the satisfaction of knowing you did this yourself

Well the prep-work is done, and now I wait for my bumper, skirts, and spoiler to come in tomorrow (took 2 days off work for this :-P). Snapped a couple of shots of the progress thus far.

Side skirts and splash guards are off (not at all hard, just a little annoying without lifting the car), and the warped back is now completely straight (did a little more work after taking the last pic. My recommendation to anyone doing this is compare the left and right mounting holes to make sure they are as close to even as you can get them, and check all the little brackets for the plastic trim underneath (they're a good indicator around bent areas). Of course hopefully you'll never have to do anything like this. Rustoleum worked great too.

It's funny, today I was heading back from LA and I saw a 03 doggy door sedan in silver with a 05-06 rear bumper. It looked really nice with the doggy door. But the guy didn't replace that piece on the bottom of the rear quarter panel with one from a 05-06, but he did paint the OEM piece.

I think it makes a huge difference (apparently painting the side skirts and dark bumper trim is a pita). Ordered the two parts for an 05, they should go on next week and i'll snap some pics

It's funny I'm reading this thread because a day ago I nearly got ****ing killed literally when some bitch in a SUV ran a red light.... would of left me dead for sure No side airbags can save anyone... It's a good thing the car has sharp stock brakes because I stopped just in time.
The insurance will cover the car and pay out the money I owe on it but I would be left without a car

Good luck with the repair. I would fix it too. Any RWD car is worth it
