time for the 15,000 mile service

i'm getting close to that 15k mark, so i decided to do a search and call my local infiniti dealers for some info. this is for a 2003 sedan.

dealer 1 = $304.34
-oil change
-brake inspection
-steering inspection
-something about "*****" (she was talking pretty fast)
-differential fluids
-rotate tires (alignment recommended, but not included)
-fuel system treatment
-wiper inserts replaced
-hookup to diagnostic machine
-full inspection of all other fluids

dealer 2 = $304 + tax
-oil service
-tire rotation and pressure check
-brakes, transmission, and engine inspection
-wiper inserts replaced
-refill all fluids
-lube door locks and hinges
-steering linkage
-exhaust and drivebelt inspection
-antenna lubing (eh?)
-battery check
-overall inspection of "about 30 things"
-hookup to a diagnostic machine
-vacuum and the dreaded carwash

here are some links to previous posts about the 15k service:

old thread 3

those 2 dealerships listed above are in my area, so i guess i will stick to my regular service center (dealer 2). what do you people think? anything look weird or anything that you wouldn't pay for? sounds like a total rip? any input is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Well..............
You can do many of those items yourself.
Last time I checked, I didn't have an antenna, just the
rear windshield. Do the wheels really need rotating,
the tire shop around the corner can do it much cheeper.
I would pick out the items you want them to do, do the
ones yourself that you can, and maybe have someone
else do the ones you can't. They wanted to do a bunch
of stuff to my sedan at 30K. I declined on most. Remember,
all these guys at the dealership want to do is to part you
from your money. They are NOT your friends, no matter
how nice they seem! HeHe

Re: time for the 15,000 mile service

I live in Indy and at my dealer I just had them do what Infiniti recommends at 15K. It ran me about $90. I also changed my own cabin filter for about $25 and it only took about 15 minutes to do.

Isn't it important to get all the "recommended" service done by the dealer? What if some thing went wrong with your car late in the warranty period and they refuse to fix because you haven't been maintianing your car properly?

I don't think they can void your warranty if you don't have
the in-cabin filter changed at 15k, of don't have an expensive
oil additive put in your G. Just do the things Infiniti
recommends. The dealers like to add a bunch of custom
stuff.

I plan to skip the 15k service and do it myself. I'm no mechanic, but most of those things they listed, I can do. GL.

I also plan to do most work myself, and only plan to take it to my Infiniti dealer for the royal service treatment at the 30K intervals. Even for those, I plan to have them leave off the air filter change, cabin filter change, oil change, tire rotation, wiper blade replacement as I can handle all that myself.

Re: time for the 15,000 mile service

I would skip it, personally. Most of the items you listed can be visually inspected by a knowledgeable friend. The cost of the remaining items just doesn't add up imo.

I could "recommend" (*cough*)someone for you here in Vegas. No I won't even go there if you know what I mean.

They forgot the most useful parts of the inspection:

1. Checking Headlight Fluid
2. Inspection of "piston return springs"
3. Confirmation that your tires are indeed, "round"

Re: time for the 15,000 mile service

The dealer I go to only does the recommended by the manual maintenance and I paid around $190 for the 15K service last month. I used to do my own service and they can't void your warranty as long as you have receipts and such for things like oil changes.

But I figure my time is worth more than it cost me to let the dealer do my maintenance.

They also check how much is left on your brakes fronts 50% and rear 40% remaining... I can smell a free brake job coming up

Re: time for the 15,000 mile service

I looked at the stuff for the 3750 mile check up and then just went to Firestone to have my oil changed. Most of that stuff is courtesy checking IMO. As far as warranty, I would think if you had work done by a certified mechanic and kept receipts that you're fine.

Re: time for the 15,000 mile service

I guess it depends where you go at Herb Chambers in Boston for my 3750 and 11250 service they only did oil which cost me $40 but they vacuumed and washed the car plus they valet your car as you pull in. They are really quick and courteous. It's worth it to me. For the 7500 and 15000 they only did the service recommended in the manual so I am okay with it so far.

I remember my last car Dodge Intrepid the dealer was always sending me these bullshit flyers about needing my injectors cleaned and a whole lot of other nonsense that was recommended in the manual.

Re: time for the 15,000 mile service

I just had my 15000K service done on my sedan. I provided all the parts myself like the filters, oil, wiper blades, etc. The week prior I put on new wheels and tires, the rotation did not need to be done. I refused to do it on my own because the in-cabin micro seems like a huge pain in the rear to get to. To make a long story short, all they charged me for was basically the labor since I provided all the materials. They credited me the price THEY charge, which in all instances was more expensive than the items I bought, except for the oil. The dealers here in SoCal like to use that Pennzoil 10W-30, whereas I purchased the Mobil 1 5W-30. can I do all that stuff myself, yes, with the exception of the in cabin micro. As long as you have receipts from certified mechanics or stores, they cannot void your warranty. just my .02 cents.
