Has anyone had this happen?
This happened to me when I bought the car a few days ago. On the 90 mile ride back home I had to refuel. I was trying to figure out how to open the gas cover and then started pressing some buttons on the remote(the manual was hidden in the trunk grrr). Anyway, after I fueled I went to get back in the car - locked! Fortunately I had my keys in my pocket.

I hate these automatic locking things. Drives me nuts.

Only thing I can think of, is on your way out, part of your body grazed the door panel and manually flipped the switch to lock, in which case it will stay locked keys in or not, car running or not.
Well he didn't say the keys were in the ignition. If you take them out of the ignition and press unlock and leave the keys in and then close the door you are screwed. That is my guess...

I don't get it...

when I fill up, I put the car in park, turn the car off(take keys out of ignition) and put them in my pocket.

Not sure what the benefit is of leaving the keys in the car

I leave my car running when I fill up everytime and I close the door to go to the pump. Saves the starter

sorry, but either you are kidding or that is ridiculous

that is not good regarding emission system/possible ck engine lights turning on and rough idle, a very rare chance of igniting fuel vapors, chance of someone jumping into your G and taking off--especially since you fill up opposite to driver door, you could accidentally get locked out of your car, you could potentially go back to your driver seat and forget about filling up and drive off with hose in your tank; it is plain irresponsible imo.

Happens to me all the time. I think this is the trick. If you enter your car and then Lock your doors, drive to the gas station, and park the car. Now if you get out WITHOUT hitting unlock and close the door, and then hit UNLOCK on the fob to unlock the gas tank, the car WILL lock itself.

So to solve this, you must hit the UNLOCK button on the DOOR to unlock the tank.

It sounds confusing but do you get it?

It happened to me twice in the past. I have an 05' sedan, so I don't think its an issue with the 03's only. Car was unlocked when I got out, locked when I tried to get back in. First time, I had my keys with me. Second time, I got out of the car to get something from the house with the car running. Came back and it was locked. I now carry the wallet key with me all the time, but also never leave the car without my keys. I now have a compustar installed too.

It sounds like your door pin switches are going out. If a switch is defective or starting to wear out, it can't tell when the door is open or not. If you go to unlock the car, open the door and close it with a bad switch, the car will never know you just opened the door.

Replace the switch and see if that does the trick.
