Now I know what the rev-limiter feels like!

While driving to work this morning, I came to a stop light.
When the light turned green, I noticed a car a ways behind
me coming up fast, so I floored it. I was in MM mode in first
gear, but had forgotten this small fact! It went all the way up
to redline. I thought, wow, this 5AT is sweet! Then the Tach
needle dropped like a rock and the power just kind of
disappeared. Then I realized what a dumb as$ thing I had
done. Popped it into 2nd at took off feeling pretty sheepish
about what I might have done to my beauty. She seems OK,
thank goodness for the rev-limiter. The reason I won't go back
to SouthWest Houston Infiniti is because the last time I was
there, the dumb as$ service rep told me that the G35 does not
have a rev-limiter and resetting the ECU will cause it to burn
out... Now I know for a fact that he was full of Bull ****!

Is it not amazing the amount of inconsistencies and crap that comes from an Infiniti Tech sometimes. I had one tell me using MM mode is bad for the tranny!

Re: Now I know what the rev-limiter feels like!

You won't damage the car by banging off the rev-limiter or using the manual mode. Driving aggressively all the time, obviously, will shorten the drivetrain's life.. but most likely not enough for you to worry about by the time you get rid of this car for the next one.

Salesmen and service techs, in an attempt to avoid saying "I don't know," often make things worse by pulling something out of their ****.

I have a similar story only "opposite". I drive predominately in MM and a couple of times, after stopping at the store or something, I head back out and accelerate up the road...forgetting I am now in "D". Without really thinking I tap the gear shifter up under brisk throttle application only to scare the s*** outta myself as the stick goes into Neutral and the tach needle jumps like a scalded dog. I hope the only damage I had done was to my heart. I kinda wish you had to activate the shift button to hit neutral. This would make it "Teddy" (read "Idiot") - proof.

Good thing it won't pop into reverse. Wouldn't that be the pits!

Ouch!!

I agree with ryoken. If you don't know something there is no shame in saying "I don't know, but I will find out". It's much worse to perpetuate BS in general.

Re: Now I know what the rev-limiter feels like!

Most cars are like that.. the button isn't needed to get to neutral, but it is to get to reverse. You won't hurt the car, the rev-limiter protects the engine, and the tranny.. well, it's in neutral.. what harm is there? Just make sure you let off the gas before putting it back in Drive so you don't shock the tranmission too badly. If you're already at freeway speeds, light throttle is probably better than no throttle before doing that.. about 2500 RPMs or so, somewhere around where it should be at that speed if it were already in D to minimize the difference.
