Purchasing 2004 6MT Today....?

Hi all. This is my first post to the forum however I have been visiting the forum as a guest for awhile and doing some research on the car and other options as well for a sports sedan. After about a year I am about to pull the trigger on a 2004 G35 6MT with just under 40,000 miles. The car is very clean in my opinion and the price seems right. I test drove the car for about an hour on Friday and I love it. Wanted to get thoughts from the experts on price and any other words of wizdom before I head over tonight to sign the financing paper work and drive home with my new ride.

BTW, they are unwilling to negotiate on the price as their "internet price" is as low as they will go. They were willing to drop the extended warrenty from $3K to $2K but its an aftermarket warranty and I am a little unsure if its worth it.

Here's a link to the cars.com ad:

Thanks all.

Matt

car looks nice, price seems fair. looks just like mine except w/out the rear spoiler. where is the cigarette lighter? not that you use it, but it is missing. make sure it has the full-size spare, owner's manual, etc...

did you notice any grinding when shifting? specifically 1-2, 2-3, 4-5?

get a pre-purchase inspection, and review the service records.

I did not notice any grinding and I drove it for about an hour.

They don't have any service records because they bought from an auction. It was a lease from New Jersey.

The cigarette lighter was there when I test drove it.

They said they replaced the clutch through the Infiniti Manufacturer's warranty. I'll aks for that on paper.

Thanks for the reply!

They provided me with a carfax report. There was nothing on it except for some early on stuff from 2004. Basically that it was being leased in Jersey and basic lease terms.

Should I trust their report or should I purchase a carfax report myself? Their print out seems legit but I thought it was strange that the last entry in the report was from 2004... I am not too familiar with reviewing carfax reports though so maybe thats perfectly normal for a car that has not been in an accident, towed, etc.

^^replaced the clutch on warranty? the only way that would happen is if the tranny was replaced under warranty, as happened to my car. the warranty does not cover wear and tear items like clutches, unless defective from the factory.

make sure the inspection looks at the brakes. our cars eat OEM brake pads and rotors. if work is required soon you may have something to negotiate with.

I think the price is pretty spot on. They are still making a profit, as they should, but not a killing.

Are you suggesting I take it somewhere else for an inspection? Do you mean like a state inspection station or Infiniti dealer?

I will have to ask more questions about the clutch...
Thanks.

The car looks nice for the price and mileage but I would try to bargain down lower if you can. From what I've read, 6MT on the '03-'04 sedan model seem to hold up better than the '05-'06 model due to the oil consumption problem on the '05-'06 6MT.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I did not know that there was a difference in the instrument cluster between the AT and MT models on the '03-'04 sedan. Here's the cluster from the 6MT the OP is looking at:

And here's the cluster from a '03-'04 5AT sedan:

As you can see, the gear selector display is shown underneath the tachometer on the automatics, but not the manuals. I wonder why...

Ummm... that's not a serious question, is it?

if you drive a manual and need an indicator ... well, you probably shouldn't be driving a manual.

That's a damn good price imo. I would not sell my 04 6MT for that... One minor note, the 04s did not have Bi-Xenon Lights as standard equipment as is noted under Seller's Notes.

None of the first gen has bi-xenon. HID is only for low beam. High beam/fog combo is a helogen H4 bulb.

That price seems very good. I read from another thread that it's really depend on the demographic because in your area, 6mt is probably not a high demand option. Whereas, in Socal, it is sought after more.

I would offer a fair price based on KBB and then if they did not accept, then negotiate something in the middle. But no haggling, please. Don't fall in love with the car and feed into the bs that they have the only clean, low mileage 6sp G in the world. Leave your number, they will call you so long as its a fair offer. Dealers are desperate to move inventory, both new and used. Dealers make the most money on used cars since they lowball trades and such and then mark them up.

umm, yeah. it should be inspected at an independent service centre. don't just take their word that the car is "mint".

an infiniti dealer would be fine, or nissan...
